This is my first post, and it's a pricing question...
I would prefer to hang out and read instead of just jumping in but I'm in a
little bit of a dilemma!
I've been looking at tractors with a FEL on and off for a while now, and while
I'd love to buy new it looks like used is going to be in my price range.
First off, you'll have to excuse my ignorance. This will be my first tractor
purchase and I'm very much a newbie!

Right now I'm looking at a TC29 (00' model) 4WD with a 7308 loader. It is a trade in at a dealership. It also has a hydrostatic trans.
The tractor has 1700 hours and looks like it has been worked. The tractor
was on the lot in 40deg weather and was a little balking starting. Once it
was running it sounded "good", not too rattly. The finish is dulled like
it has spent most of its life outside. I drove it around the lot, forward and
reverse and in the different gears. That seemed OK. The bucket would lift
the front end off the ground. There don't appear to be any leaks. There is
one new front tire and the other tires are Ag tires that have rounded edges but still deep tread.

The biggest problems with the tractor is all the loader pins seemed loose. Looking at the loader bushings it doesn't look like the previous owner knew what a grease gun was.
The engine oil was very black and there was not any oil touching the front axle dipstick.
The other problem was the steering column would not lock in any position. I had a chance to talk to the previous owner and he said that there is some kind of interconnect between the throttle and forward/reverse pedal that did not work either. He said he had traded it on a larger tractor because the 29
would not pull his 6ft bush hog very well, but he had been using it for
that purpose as long as he had owned it (he bought it new) anyway.
So, long story short, the dealership was asking 8,600 and I've talked them down to 8,000. I've got 14 acres that is mostly pasture with about 5 acres or so in woods. My primary needs are bushhoging and grading a long gravel driveway. I also need to move around some dirt on occasion, hence the FEL.
I live in central NC.
I hope I have provided enough info to get at least some idea of good deal/bad deal!!

I think that I'd have to walk away, it's obviously not been maintained very well, quite likely abused as well.

It's definatly not one of those "no brainers". The maintence issue looks to be a big one.
I'm not going to be making a living with this tractor, I probably wouldn't rack up more than several hundred hours a year with it, but I don't want to be working on it more than using it either!

Walk away and look for another machine.

Walk away. There is no substitute for a well maintained machine.

Welcome to TBN :D! Good machine (I have one.), right size for your intended use, bad maintenance and history of abuse. Walk away. Jay

Thanks for all the replies!
Just to play devil's advocate, how expensive would it be to rebuild the hydraulic ram pivot points? Is this even done?
Also, how do these small diesels hold up? If this tractor has been used hard for 1700 hours is it most likely worn out? Would 1700 hours on a well maintained machine still be excessive?
Sorry for all the questions, but this is the first used machine with FEL I've looked at and I'm still trying to get a feel for what's OK/not OK.

STOP!!!!

Look at the entire picture - the tractor - all of the tractor - has been a victim of poor maintenance.

Sure it could be rebuilt, but at what cost in dollars and time?

Most of use buy a tractor knowing it will serve for many years. Not just 4 or 5 - but twenty or more. A few dollars saved at the time of the initial purchase will completely disappear over the years. Likewise, for a few extra dollars spent at the time of the initial purchase.

There are good used machines available that have been traded for larger tractors, sold because of illness, retirement, life-style changes, etc. Take your time and find a well cared for tractor.

You do not want one that was rode hard and put away wet!

1700 hrs of abuse it's hard to say what other damage the previous owner has done, and the price says it all --I looked for 2 years could not find any decent used tractors for that price up north anyway.

use your money for a down payment on a new with 0%

Don't kick your self later for taking a chance-- the oil tells all.
