I pinched the cable where it is connected to the hook. The cable looks to be 3/8".
I would like to cut it and feed it back through the eye of the hook. Just curious as to how many cable nuts I should use? I am thinking 3 or 4 spread over a 10-12" length.
I will tape over everything as well as slide a piece of pvc over the end.

Your thoughts?

Winch will haul 8000lbs

Never Saddle a Dead Horse. I have a certificate for construction hoisting. The saddle and U bolt make up what is commonly called a Crosbly clip. The U clip goes on the dead end that is the little short end. The thimble is formed up. Minimun of 3 clips equally spaced on the load cable max 4 clips. The saddle is on the load cable. There are other methods. Now you know, Never Saddle a Dead Horse.
