Log of steel

Yesterday I was cleaning up some fallen trees and stumps alongside the road right of way, clearing for a possible fencing project. I almost chainsawed one log a few days before, but thought I could pull it out intact or it would fall apart. One end was hollow, so I thought it would be light or fragile . It had been visible for many years, but was never in the way.

It turned out to be a 12" by 12' steel pipe, full of dirt! The outside appears to be a spiral wrapped tar-like coating, and there is a clamp/coupling on one end.

My problem is that I can't think of any project for it.

Really glad I didn't saw it!

Congrats on saving your chainsaw chain, axes, and whatever else you might have otherwise used.

My place was homesteaded in 1875. I found that cutting standing or fallen trees around the old buildings is hard on chain saws. They attached pig wire, gate support hinges, barb wire etc directly to the trees. Very hard on chain saw blades to find this stuff buried in the big old trees.

That pipe is called "dope and wrapped" and likely was left over from a pipeline running thru your place at one time. That is the type of protection available up until the late 60's (asphalt coated then kraft paper wrapped) which is why many of them are failing today. Small cracks in the asphalt allow water to get in and start corrosion.
If I had it , I would clean out the dirt and use it for a culvert.

No pipelines anywhere near, but I suspect it was left over from someone's culvert project.

It would make a good small culvert, but I don't have any need for a culvert.
