Hi, I just purchased the commercial 3000 loadhandler for my pickup bed. I wanted to power it using an electric motor and figured the best and easiest way was to use a winch since they can pull the weight with there gears, etc. Thinking of taking off the carriage and spool for the cable so I just have the motor/gear/electrics/mounting plate to connect to the end of the loadhandler bar. Anyone have any other better ideas for powering it?

Just out of curiosity have you tried moving a load by hand?

It is pretty easy. I could move a couple hundred lbs with my pinky

I could but I have been putting way more than 3000lbs (more like 4-5000lbs on the tarp and its a bit hard to crank, no signs of bending or breaking (and if it does I'll just beaf it up). This is just for now till I get an alumnuim flat bed with dump hoist in a couple years.

Don't you think a boat winch would give you enough torque for the roller.

You also use a small sprocket and chain assembly with maybe a six to one ratio.

Have you ever tryed unloading load after load your arms and back begin to ache. Load handler has a good idea not great thow they need to have a power unit to help unload a heavy load which would make them great

I take it you have a heavy duity pickup. What's the bed's capacity? Just curious.

F450 with a F350 bed on it. 4-5 tons max

I have an idea of removing the cable from the winch and using a strap in the winch and adding an extention to the loadhandler bar past the tailgate then bolting a two by six onto the bumper to extend it past the tailgate. Then bolting the winch to the 2 by 4 past the tailgate "to the left" and attaching the strap to the loadhandler. When I pull the tarp out for the loadhandler the strap is wraped around the loadhandler extention. Then when I power it in the winch pulls the strap turning the loadhandler which unloads my load. Haven't tryed it yet but have bought all the materials needed. Hopefully this week I complete my project and see if it really works. Can't go on cranking off load after load its to much work

I like your idea of taking the spool off of a winch and then attaching the output to the loadhandler shaft. The trick might be mating the two but the planetary gear set should otherwise be ideal for powering the loadhandler. Might want to have a disconnect so that the tarp can be unrolled without having to reverse the winch. A similar arrangement to what most winches already have?
