I snapped a Zerk fitting on one of my loader pins and can not back out the remaining threads (using a remover from a tap set). Never had that problem before. Is there any trick to replacing the entire pin or is it as easy as it looks. I assume the pins are relatively inexpensive? This is a lower pin on the quick attach.

Mornin Paul,
Heres an option for you. I had pins that were worn and the zerks were broken, heres a link to what I did to fix my problem !

I would assume that those pins aren't as cheap to get as a new zerk. Plus it is an easy item to get the wrong one of when ordering a new part. If I broke off a zerk, I would go to the next size up, drill out the old one and install the new one. They make them in screw in and press fit, so you have a choice. Replacing a zerk is a lot easier than ordering a new pin, removing the old one, taking the new one back cause it is wrong, ordering another new one and waiting a week for it to get here, hoping it is the right one. Last time I did a pin replacement I finally found a machine shop to make me a new pin and got a refund on my new part. Because it was the same size as standard size stock, the manufactured pin was less than the dealer's pin.
Hopefully you have better luck than I did trying to order one!

Some pins are reasonable, but few are cheap. Low price is 50-ish and high prices are 200 or more. Depends on the size of the pin, and other specifications like material, temper, grease grooves, drilled for zerk, ect.

Only one way to find out.

Once you get the price for a pin, you may find that the bushing is also required. If you think the pins are spendy - bring a chair with you to the parts counter. Then bring a softer chair with you to the machine shop it the new bushing needs to be press fit and align honed to size.

That's why the 3 most important things to do with a loader are 1) grease 2) grease 3) grease.

Paul,
I pretty much agree with David and John, machining is expensive if you have to pay for it and a good remedy is grease and grease some more ! The only reason I went the way I did is because it didnt cost me anything to make them other than the price of new zerks ! This was an option for me but wont work for everyone.

Scott,
I pretty much agree with your statement about machining is expensive if you have to pay for it. I have a home machine shop and just funding it is as expensive or more than funding my tractor adiction, so it is expensive either way, just more if you have to pay someone else to do it. If he is lucky, the pins he needs will be a standard size and straight and his bushings will still be in good shape. The cost of these will probably make him consider another method of changing out that zerk fitting, and maybe even investment of a new grease gun with a 30 gallon can of grease to keep them grease well.

If you are having problems using an ez-out.. why not try a left handed drill bit...

are you sure it is a screw in zerk and not a drive in?

I did the same - to one of the pins that holds the bucket in place. Gave me the opportunity to figure out what 1/4 the effort would be to swap my bucket out (I don't have QA).

New pin cost about 17 bucks. I learned that there is no way EVER that I am going to undo th bucket from the loader by choice. Good thing I don't have an urgent need for forks or something else to go on the loader.

canoetrpr,
Actually, you just found the reason they make forks that attach to the bucket!!!

sandman:

Are the ones that attach to the bucket any good? I've heard that they move around pretty easily etc. I could see using some forks for ease of moving the odd thing around - like unloading something from a truck etc. Or for brush.

Next tractor around I will get QA - wasn't available on the 463 loader when I purchased the L3400. Not sure whether it is worthwhile yet to pick up the ones that attach to the bucket or to wait. I'll probably want the QA forks if I have QA in the future though?
