Case D29
I have a 2001 d29 Case tractor that for the last 10 years has work perfectly, well the grass is due for its first trim of the year so I put on the 3pt finish mower
only to find out that I can't engage the PTO, it just grinds. After looking into this some it appears that my clutch on the live PTO is not disengaging the PTO.

Any ideas?

You probably answered your own question.
My question for you is do you have a two-stage clutch? Is it properly adjusted?
After 10 years of use, there is likely some wear in that clutch. What you need to determine is if it's adjustable or if it requires replacement.

Soundguy What do you mean my breaking it lose?

Roy it looks like its been adjusted about as far as it will go from the factory, when I disconnect the linkages from the clutch lever and activate it by hand it don't help.

IE.. stuck, and breaking it loose.

Multi disc motorcycle clutches will and often do, that very same thing when put up for extended periods of non-use. However, they are somewhat easier to break free because you pull the clutch lever fully and kick the engine over which usually breaks the clutch free after a couple attempts.

For a tractor, I can only think of one way to accomplish this and I doubt it's a great idea but will work.

Fully attach the mower to the tractor, 3pt, PTO, everything. Move to a clear and safe area away from others or animals you like. Start the tractor, allow it to warm up for a few minutes if not warm already. Stop the engine. Engage the PTO lever normally, depress the clutch at start the engine AT IDLE with the transmission in "N" and the parking brake on. Allow the mower to operate at idle for a minute or two. Attempt to disengage the PTO clutch a few times, if it steadfastly refuses to de-clutch, with the clutch depressed to fully disengage the PTO, quickly but not violently increase engine speed and return to idle. Do not be too aggressive with the engine speed changes.

If the above does not work I'm pretty sure it's disassembly time for the clutch.

Here's a update to the thread, The rod that links my clutch pedal with the clutch had a small crack in it which I repaired by welding it until I could order a new one. To make a long story short there was a slight difference between the rods and after installing the new rod my clutch has returned to normal with all its intended functions.:D
