Anyone use Linseed oil on their treated trailer decks? Someone gave me four gallons and figured that I could use it on the trailers.

Might be slick when wet. Try a small section first.

linseed oil comes in two types, boiled and raw, neither of which are very good finishes. They offer almost no water protection, they polymerize slowly and are very soft, and really don't give you any protection, so in my opinion, you are wasting your time, and worse, creating a situation that might be detrimental to the adhesion of future finishes.

I second what the last guy said. I see people put it on wood for boat and it does not work out. You would be better off using it somewhere else and using old diesel oil and some diesel fuel mix to coat your trailer.

Linseed oil is what they use (or used to use) to make oil based paint. I don't think it penetrates all that well. Think of porch deck paint. Probably wouldn't hold up on a trailer deck.

One trailer I bought, the fellow recommended a mixture of diesel and ATF.

I have seen that mixture used with good success.

used motor oil works quite well on wooden trailers. and it's free.

recently used boiled linseed on an old porch swing, then painted it with oil based alkyd paint. worked great.

Thanks Gents....

We always had to use it on wooden ladders and tool handles and I never saw that it was that effective then. Just something we were told to do. Ha!

Thought it might be a way to get rid of some FREE oil product. Again, Thank you.

Well if it's free then I quess you won't be out anything?

I have also used the diesel and ATF worked okay. Used oil mixed with a thinner of some sort would proabaly be better.

Does anyone know the reasoning behind the diesel and ATF mix vs. using one or the other alone?
