I have a continental engine that I purchased recently. I was told that it came out of a sa200 ,the problem is it has no ID tag nor can I find any #s on the block. is there another way to tell what I have? It's loose about 90 degrees then stops like it has rust in the bores, gonna pull the head off it but how can I order parts if I dont know what I have?

Thanks for any and ALL Help !!

Scott

Hang on a bit, ShieldArc'll see this pretty soon. He owns about 45 of those things, I bet at least 2-3 of 'em have the Continental... Steve

Hey, SA, not ribbin' you too much - that's the first machine I ever struck an arc with :=)

If it did come out of a Lincoln SA-200, you either have an F-162, or F-163 Continental engine.
One easy way to tell, the F-162 will have a pipe cap for the oil filler cap like this one.

Thanks SA . it looks like the 162. Oil fill and dipstick in the same location .check. starter down by the pan rail.check. about a 1/2 inch plate on the rear or the engine has rounded edges but otherwise looks the same. check. BTW it has a gear driven Mag on it and the carb looks to have a separate idle linkage on it .

were the 162's and 163's the only continentals Lincoln used?

My purpose is to build a standby genset.
so I guess my next question is does anyone know what the power output is at 1800 Rpm ???

Thanks again !!!
Scott

Oh, and can a bellhousing be adapted ??

Far as I know the F-162, and F-163 were the only engines used in the SA-200. Now some of the SAE-300 and bigger welding machines used a 6-cylinder Continental.

I don't know about adapting a bellhousing, but I don't see why not! You do know these engines are used mostly in forklifts, and tractors, correct?

This site is a little hard to get around in, but everything you'll ever want to know about an SA-200 is here. Just have to dig around.

Thanks SA

I think my next step will be pulling the head to check and measure the bores.

If you're not in any hurry for the motor, have you thought about pulling the spark plugs and filling the cylinders with Marvel Mystery Oil, and let it soak?

Kroil is another good penetrant. I have free'd up some rusted diesel fuel injection pumps with that stuff. Brake fluid works decent to if you are looking for cheap. Time is your friend .... let it soak for a long time.

Ive had good luck with acetone atf mix but without knowing the history of the engine , Ive pulled the pan and the manifold and head will be next.

Thanks For all the help and advice !

Im thinking I can power a 15kw generator at 1800 rpm . I assume It should be about 30 hp at 1800, of course Im well aware what assuming usually gets me !!
