We built our house almost 2 years ago. The front yard is about 300'x300'. It's pretty bumpy, poor grass growth (bald areas of dirt), etc. I'd like to try to smooth it out and get some grass going in the spring. The soil is black clay, my favorite :(

So I've got a massey compact tractor with some 3 pt. implements including a box blade and a tiller. I'm thinking about doing a shallow till around the whole yard to break it up and then dragging the box blade to level it out. I've got a section of chain link fencing that I've used to help smooth out dirt in the past as well.

I read somewhere that you can do this in the fall, then the freezing/thawing over the winter will help break up the soil further, and by spring it should take some grass nicely. Even if just the native grasses come back thicker that'd be ok in my book. We planted bermuda all around the house, it goes about 40' out from the foundation on all sides. It's beyond that that I'm talking about.

Thoughts?
