Tractor
Kioti CK20S HST
Ok... I'm ready to pull the trigger on a CK20S HST or a TYM's K2, but I still have worries on both tractors.

Last year, I came to this site to research tractors, but was lacking in funds (I didn't want to over stretch myself)... so I laid low for a while... I now have things straighted out and I come to see peak at what's going on with the CK20S HST, and I find there are cold start problems. Possibly a new head design coming soon to remedy it. So what should I do?

I see that TYM is offering the 273 for $12K with the front loader (I love the ides that it also comes with QA standard), but it's not available on the East Coast at this price. I also didn't like the condition of the TYM I looked at last year. The thing looked like it had been worked hard and put up wet, but it only had a few hours on it....

Dang it!! I want a tractor so I wanna pull the trigger now!!!

Someone... Tell me how Kioti is going to fix the cold start problem and if your a dealer, give me your BEST price, because if the FIX makes sense, I WILL PULL THE TRIGGER on getting a new tractor THIS WEEK!!!

Kioti has a program to install a water heater for the CK20S, the starting difficulty is only experienced below 30 degrees. Your Kioti dealer can give you the details and install the kit on Kioti's dime. If you store your tractor in a garage or barn, it may not even be necessary. On ours, we just cycle the glow plugs twice if its cold enough to be a problem, and our tractors all sit outside.

I have a new CK20 (s) with an HST. It has under 50 hours on it. For me, the cold start thing has been a non issue. I do keep the tractor in the garage at a constant 38* and I just insert key and cycle the glo plugs one time. It always starts the first time. I don't know how it would start every day at 20* but the day the tractor was delivered it had been out in the weather on a trailer at 20* for several hours. It started after maybe after three tries.

What's wrong with that for Pete's sake it is a diesel engine and we were trying to start it in the dead of Winter. If one were to want to improve on any Winter starting issues couldn't he stick a magnetic oil pan heater on the thing for a couple of hours ahead of time.

Don't let that CK20 S HST get away from you. It's too darn nice of a tractor. That's the way I see it.

My dealer showed me a little trick and I have never had any problems starting in the cold. This is my snowblower, so it works after every big snowstorm. The coldest day was -5 F and I still had no problem starting.

What I do is turn the key to the glow plug position and wait for the light to go out, when it does I turn it to the start position and crank it until it catches (about 3-4 revs) , as soon as it starts I release the key so that it goes to the on position but then turn it to the glow plug position again until the idle smooths out (about 2-4 secs). Cycling the glow plugs twice will really drain your battery and could hurt your chances of cranking the engine. Once the engine catches, you can turn the glow plugs on again because now the alternator is powering the glow plugs and not draining the battery.

I have ck20s, and love it. There were a few minor problems in the get go. But they were not that bad. The first was the hour meter was not working, come to find out bad glow plug relay. The second was a oil leak near the hydro pump, come to find out there is a cooper washer that makes the seal and the bolt just needed to be tightened up with a new washer.
Those were my only issues with it. It has 50hours on it now and it is going strong. I can see why people say they have cold start issues it is a little rough when it gets cold, but you just cycle it through a couple times and starts and sputters for about 10 secs and then runs smooth. I thought I had issues with the cold starting but have just gotten used to it, it has never failed to start in temps as low as the low 20s. If you do get one of these it will be money well spent, just look at what all the people have to say about them here, they speak for themselves, then you decide.

Thanks for the info folks... I got a message from Amy @ Wallace Tractor this morning.. Drove 180 miles, one way, to make sure the CK20S HST can do what I hoped, then made the deal. I'm expecting the CK20S HST TLB to be delivered sometime this week.

I got it with Rick's QA adapter, larger 54" bucket, with hooks to be welded, and a tooth bar (Why isn't it called a TEETH bar??? I guess it was invented in WV. :D ), a Pegasus Box blade and the block heater for cold weather. It's also to have the rear remote because I went with the Kioti backhoe. I don't know a think about back hoes, but Rick puts on a rear remote with the Kioti 2465 hoe, but not the Woods. What's odd is that the Woods was a bit more expensive still.

He's also suppose to make the cold start right when Kioti comes out with a fix too. I hate the idea of having to plug it in then wait an hour... Plus, my new tractor's going to be stored 200 ft from the nearest outlet, so I don't want to have to run a generator, or an extension cord to get it warmed up enough to start.

Although I have no idea how to use one, I can't wait to get my hands on it... The only seat time I've had was driving another TBN member's CK25 (Thanks Tom) and a CK20S from Wallace last fall. Oh, and a few minutes today at Wallace Tractor too.

BTW, I don't know how easy this would be, or even if it would be cost effective for Kioti, but I feel the easiest fix for cold start is to add a GRID heater in place of the glow. I've got a Grid heater in my Dodge and it'll allow it to start at any temp.

Crabjoe,

I think you made a sound decision. I don't think you will ever regret choosiing your new ck20S HST. It really is lot's of tractor. I'm now starting to get antsy to take off my rear blower but apparently I better hang on at least until I mop up after tonights snow storm. Maybe this will be it and I can drop the blower and hook up the backhoe and get some hours in on that for the first time. I bought a Kioti KB2465 backhoe with my ck20 also.

Spring is coming and we won't be needing any plugs for heaters for a while anyway. Good luck with the new Kioiti.
