Thanks to the responses that I received in response to my questions regarding my land clearing. After speaking with a a lot of people, I have decided to get my land timbered first, and then decide on the best way to get the land cleared.

I got quotes from a few different timber companies, and finally decided on one. The company I chose seemed to be the most conscientious of everyone that I spoke with. After making sure they understood exactly what I wanted cleared, thinned and left alone, I signed the contract on Thursday with the assurance that they wanted to get started soon. Yesterday morning, I got a call that they were on my land and ready to get going. They got a lot done yesterday, and they were planning on coming back today, but we received our first snowfall of the year last night. They are hoping to resume on Monday.

For those who did not read my other thread, here is a brief recap. I own 23 acres outside of Richmond, VA. I have lived here 5 years and currently, only about 1 1/2 acres are cleared for my house and yard. The remaining 21 acres are covered in a 30 year old stand of Lob Looy Pines. My wife and I decided to clear ~10 acres. We plan on putting in a pond, garden, pasture, small barn, fire pit, and eventually a gazebo. We have a lot of work to do, but we have to start somewhere.

Attached are some pictures of yesterdays work. The first picture was takedn from my driveway. The rest of of the actually clearing. If people are interested, I will continue to post pictures throughout the spring and summer of our progress.

For some reason the zip files are not working. I resized the images, so here they are again. Also, I did get pictures of the equipment, and will post them later.

Which side of Ricmond are you on? If I had to guess, I'd say New Kent.

You're exactly where I grew up! You have a wonderful stand of "pulp wood". Tall, straight, very few limbs. Lot of $$ there if you've got 20 or so acres...Check it out. Westvaco (Ashland), or West Point (VA not NY) are pole/pulpwood places... Good luck and thanks for the pics. BobG in VA---soon to be back in Goochland as well.

Actually the zip's worked fine for me. Beautiful property, looks alot like mine, except for that funny white stuff on everything :)

We have so many problems with pulp cutters here that people here have gotten pretty paranoid. Things that we would watch are the cutting boundaries that should be well marked and the number of loads removed so the logger does not “accidentally” miss count trailers coming from a clear cut area. In areas to be thinned the keeper trees are marked with paint at chest height and at the base below where the shear would cut so that our best trees are not “accidentally” cut. Trash like a lunch rapper is one thing were 200 gals of hydraulic fluid changed and “accidentally” dumped in the field is another. Contracts are great but once a tree is cut it can’t be put back and law suits are expensive.

Like I said we are a little paranoid down here when it comes to logging pulp. There is no reason for me to think any of this type of thing would happen with your loggers but they do happen often. It’s always best to keep an eye on things that can’t be fixed so you can avoid any “accidents”.
