Hi, Im going to build a lean to along the side of a 44 foot long steel pole , pole building.

Question is What kind of steel truss to use that will take the 24 foot span and how many trusses- On center distance ?

8 inch C channel Perlins? , Welded and triangulated parallel beams ?

I want to span 24 feet out from the main building if possible. So 44x24.
Want to use steel construction.
Main building sidewall 10 feet, slope to 8 ft high wall on outside of lean to.

Thanks, Dave

I have some bar joists that are 24' in lenght, and about 12" tall, engineered from a company that put solar water collectors on them. Don't know where you are, but snow loads on perlins that long might need some serious math done to check the load capacity.

Hi, This is about 50 mi north of Houston, so measurable snow is not likely.

Well my friend has assured me that 8 inch C purlins will be fine for the 24 ft span, he said they are avail for up to 30 ft so the 24ft is good to go.

no but youll experience significant wind load from hurricanes.

I'm sure there is Mueller's someplace around you. I would go talk to them and have one of their engineers figure it out for you. They do this for free, so it's really a no brainer to go to them. Then you can either buy your materials from them, or tell them thank you and try to find another source. I like them, so it's where I go to get all my metal components.

Good luck,
Eddie

Yeah thanks Eddie, I had already got a price from muellers, they are in Willis only 27 miles from me. They quoted $2.39 a foot for 8 inch , 14 gauge Cee purlins. I did the math on it and that is 75 cents a lb which is a good deal.

I didnt know they would give free engineering help, thats awesome, thanks for that info Eddie!

Dave,

What I've done is go there with a drawing of what I want to build. I usually do this with a progrom on my computer, but I've also done it with paper and pencil. I give them the drawing and let them figure out what I need with some basic requirements. Things like door spacing and utility placement. They then come back with what materials I needed and a foundation plan. The farther out you make your posts, the more cement you need to support that load. So a foundation plan is also included.

In your case, they will need to know what you already have, and how far apart the posts are. I would take measurements and pictures to show them. Never rely on describing what's already in place since it's real easy to confuse terms. Bring the pictures and let them figure it out.

Good luck,
Eddie
