Hi All,
I need some of your collective wisdom on this project. I'd like to extend the eave section of the pole barn roof to make a lean-to addition on the side of the barn. The lean-to will be 56' long (size of barn) by about 13 or 14 feet wide.
The question I have is: How do I tie the new roof rafters to the barn? I can think of a couple ways but I don't want to re-invent the wheel.
Here are a couple pics of the outside eave and the inside framing. It's a typical pole barn. Overall barn dimensions are 30' wide x 56' long and 12' high. If I continue the 4/12 pitch of the barn roof I think I can go out about 13 or 14 feet from the barn.

Thanks in advance.
Rich

I don't have pics, but I'll try to explain what I did. My original was 26ft mid section with a 14ft shed off each side. To add the additional sheds from that I determined how much height I wanted to have at the outside edge of the new shed. As it worked out I was able to continue with the same slope, 3/1, (No snow to contend with). I measured down and mounted a beam running the entire length about 12 inches below the original roof line. This gave me room to work under it to attach the new metal, but still a small enough gap that I could seal between the sheds. Next, I dummied up the outside beam and placed a sample rafter. By adjusting the outside beam I was able to maintain the same slope. I did the simple way to get the rafters in line. Along my internal beam I used a level and just plumed down from original rafter to new beam. Each mark gave me a starting point to add my hangers. Is there probably a more sophisticated way to do this, yea probably, but the way I look at it, IT'S JUST A BARN!

Just build it

Pull the facia, facia board and soffit off and tie the new rafters into the barn. Then slide the new metal (if you can get the same profile metal) under the original metal roof sheets. If you can't get the same metal you can set a ledge and build the new roof just below the current overhang and flash it. If you barn is rather new you should be able to get the same metal still or something that is very close.

Like Robert said above lets you tie into the existing roof trusses and extend the roof for the shed. If you do not want to remove the existing trim you can attach a new header to the outside of the barn below the soffit and build off of that.

Nice looking barn.

It looks like you have a beam on top of your poles to support the trusses. If that's the case you could reduce your pitch to 1 or 2/12 and increase the size of your rafters to handle the span & snow load and go out even more. I'd probabably use metal joist hangers to hang off the existing beam and put the outside posts on 12' centers with a 2X10 or 2X12 beam running from the existing barn to the post. I'd use 2X6 on 24' centers between the beams supported by metal joist hangers on either end.
