I just took delivery of a JM 254 and was concerned about the possible leaking fuel tank. Below is a good remedy:

1) buy a can of rector seal

2) lube the fuel insert between the the two rubber rings with rector seal
- let it sit for two day's

3) No more fuel leak's from the neck when you fill it up

The cost is about $7.00 for the rector seal, but it seems to work really well.

Mark,

I thought the same thing when I heard the name. But this stuff is great, it work's on fuel, home gas line's, and water pipes, hot water furnaces.

Throw away your teflon tape and buy a can of this stuff. Caution, I would not use it for hemroids...

FWIW, the two most common places you should anticipate fuel leaks are
a) the almost useless gasket under the fuel sending unit
b) thread around the fuel return line as it re-enters the tank

The pipe thread compound will work ok on b), and I don't suppose it can't hurt on the threads of the machine screws that hold down the sending unit. But consider cutting a replacement gasket for that sending unit BEFORE everything's all put together. Otherwise it's kinda close quarters trying to get the sending unit back out from under the cowl.
