Leaking cylinder on log splitter.

I just replaced a leaking hose and now the cylinder leaks from what may be a vent at the fixed end of the cylinder. Especially when retracting after fully extending the piston. It is a Chief 214428 cylinder. I can't find any exploded drawings. What is going on?

Take a picture of the area. Theres no vent on a double acting cylinder.

Some times you just have to accept that a log splitter is going to leak. There usualy not made from high quality components.

It's a relatively easy problem to solve if you know what you are doing and have the right seals and O rings. A picture would help.

Upon removal of the cylinder I found it is a plug that takes hex head, the plug is 1.25" and I think I see a bit of a seal pushed out of the threads. You should be able to see a little black thing coming out of the threaded portion.

Where to get a new seal? could I put Teflon tape on the threads instead?

Probably just an O ring. Take it out and look it over. Any autoparts store worth their salt should have a selection.

Do you have a large enough allen wrench to take it out? If not maybe the head of a bolt the right size would work.
If no O ring is present, maybe some teflon tape but be careful not to let any of it get into the hole.

I don't have an Allen wrench that size, like the bolt idea.

If that cylinder has American SAE threads I would suspect that is a #12 O-ring boss plug and requires a 2-912 O-ring. Teflon tape most likely will not work.

Hit the head of the plug like driving a nail that frequently helps loosen them so they can be turned out easier
