Lb2204
I recently bought an lb2204. It's been a real pain to get started and its really not that cold, high 30s low 40s. I put some new glow plugs in it, two of them tested bad. It still is hard to start. I'll hold the key on preheat for thirty seconds or so, crank it, and repeat. Usually takes 5 or 6 tries.

Is this normal? Any pointers?

Also, anyone know where I can get a decent priced manual? Or parts?

Thanks.

Normal for my 3054 until I installed a lower hose coolant heater. Run the heater an hour before attempting to start, and "bingo" starts like it is summer. Tractor is stored in an unheated garage

Ok. I guess I was spoiled by my old John Deere. It didn't even have glow plugs and would start right up all the time.

Patches, does your machine have a compression release? Been trying to find what it is for but not allot of info on these old things. When I pull the knob the engine just free spins.

Every cold start is a compression test. You might try a valve adjustment. I expect these engines are designed such that the valves get looser (bigger gap) as the engine heats up (which is typical). That means they could be tight when cold and leak enough to degrade compression. Or you could just have poor compression from cylinder/piston/ring wear. But (if the engine runs OK hot) that's too hard to fix so just get a heater.

BB> the compression release is to get the engine spinning w/o a load on it inorder to get the temp & speed required to ignite the fuel.
You pull the compr. lever, spin the engine few seconds & release while the engine is still spinning.

Ok. I'll give they a try. Thanks!

The guy I bought the tractor from said it was to kill the engine of the fuel cut off didn't work.

LOL.. doesn't surprise me..
Kinda like the tractor I worked on last week.. the owner said, "if I turn the key switch to the left, it operates the CHOKE & the tractor will run better".. WHAT??
What was actually happening was.. he was operating the glow plugs while the engine was warming up/running & it would heat the cold cylinders & smooth out.. lol "choke" lol.. on a diesel.. lol
Some peoples kids..
