Traction LB 1914 Jumping out and in of FWD

I loaned my LB 1914 to a relative and it was in two-wheel drive when it was returned. I put it into fwd and it started making a loud clunking sound and seemingly jumping out of and back into gear very rapidly. Any ideas on where to start looking?

I would look at the top bearings on the front drive housing. When these fail, it allows the shaft to move enough for the gears to jump past one another. I would not use front wheel drive till bearings are checked because the gears are a little more expensive.
