Lawn tractor starts with jump but not without

So i am away and my son said that our Husqavana lawn tractor will not start without jumping from a car battery-it is a die hard silver and less than a year old- should I assume that the battery is bad- since it starts when jumped from car battery- I did have a battery tender on it so not sure why it would fail or is their something else I should have him look for- thks so much

I would remove, clean, and reattach the cables to the battery and starter first.

When it doesn't start, does the solenoid try to make the connection?

Many battery vendors happily load test your battery for free. Does it seem like the engine is rather hard to crank?

That depends on answers to questions asked in posts 2&3 you haven't responded to. I could lose my shade tree mechanic's union card for revealing this dark secret but unlike fortune tellers and Ouija Boards no one is born with ability to see and tell what ails machines without first doing some troubleshooting. A really handy tip is to use the search function, Eddie Walker was just here with the same problem and got some good advice.

Like Tom said, get it tested. I like to stick mine on a charger overnight before I take it in as some of them just say “charge battery” and really it’s dead so just save yourself that heartache. Most are using far more advanced testers now though.

thks guys my son is nort really handy so I just told him to take the battery and get it tested and wait till I get there to figure it out

What engine is in it? I had a John Deere with the Briggs engine and I had a simular issue but it wasn't the battery or starter. The valves were out of adjustment and the decompression lobe on the cam was not opening the valve enough to decomp the cylinder enough for it to turn over under battery power. A booster, jump or charger could spin it over though. After the JD dealer quoted me $1200 for a new engine I got a second opinion from a local small engine repair shop and he mentioned the valve adjustment. It took 30 minutes for me to fix it with a feeler gauge and simple hand tools and it started like a dream after that.
