I think I have this in the right place on the forum. I'm looking at two lawn tractors both Husqvarna, a YT42LS and a YT46LS. The price is $100 differenct between the two. The 46 comes with a 21.5 HP Kawasaki motor and the 42 with a 18 HP Kawasaki motor. Other than that, the only difference is 42 vs 46 inch cutting decks. I wanted a narrower deck but would I be foolish to pass on the bigger motor for $100? Any input is appreciated! Thanks.

I would chose the deck size that fits your lawn if it is only for mowing.

If you calculate the area swept by an additional 4" of blade(s) (would you rather have the outside 4" of a pizza or the inside 4" :)) the higher hp is a wash IMO.

I should have said that my mowing will be on 2 acres with trees. I'm leaning more to the 42" deck. I feel that the difference in engine HP won't really be noticable.

I would go with the larger mower/larger engine. Every inch adds up on that much area. All my mowers are 52" and sometimes I wish I had wider but I mow about 3 times your area and 52" is as wide as I can go between one building and the fence and also between some trees.

The power may not be noticeable between the 2 mowers but one will be cutting 4" more grass with each pass. You may find that the larger engine burns less gas than the small one to complete the same area.

I don't mean to hi-jack this thread, but what's with the small mower decks on higher horsepower lawn tractors these days ?
my old Bolens 1050 built in 1967 had a 42" deck and a 10HP Wisconson engine. If the blades were kept sharp, no problem cutting grass in 2nd high.
my current 16 year old Kubota TG1860G has a 54" deck with 18HP Kawasaki... again, no shortage of power.

maybe inflation has taken a bite out of horsepower ??? :confused3:

Maybe with new technology it's just easier to get more HP out of the motors. That's my guess. Either way, I'm still undecided on the 42 or 46...ha.

I've got a Toro 42" with a 24hp Kawasaki engine and the thing is stupid-over-powered.

I wish I had a fabricated mowing deck as that would do a better job cutting heavy, long grass.

I ended up welding on 1" round stock off of the metal attachment that holds the bags and putting on two 25-pound-gym-weights to get better traction.

On a separate note, can anyone tell me what transmission is in a 2004 JD LT-150?
