John Deere D140
Hi...newbe here,
My question is I have a John Deere D140 and I want to
get a lawn striper and I noticed they weigh a little over 50lbs.
I already shot the transmission in my last John Deere pulling a plug aerator
didn't have any trouble till I started using the aerator......
so the weight of these rollers has me a little concerned....should I be?
I do live on somewhat of a hill and have about 2 1/2 acres to mow.

2.5 acres FLAT is beyond the capabilities of the D140 to mow in one shot, on a hill... ouch. Instead of spending money on a new D140, you should have purchased a used GT or GX series or similar model.

50 lbs is not much, and easily the difference between a lighter and a heavier rider. I wouldn't worry about that for a striper, but realize your mower is already taxed doing what it's not designed to do. I think Deere offered/offers a striping kit for the D-series mowers which is simply a brush on the back.

That said, this is a tractor site and not a lawn mower site... lawnsite or similar may have better suggestions.

sorry, didn't realize this is just a tractor site, I do appreciate your response.....
I would purchase this D140 again, no problems for at least 7 years, I just don't aerate with it
thanks again.

I don't think he meant that you can't ask lawn mower questions on here (I've asked plenty of dumb questions and haven't been banned yet) .

I took it that he meant you might get a better answer on a dedicated lawn mower site.

Weight doesn't have to be that much. You're just bending the grass. I have a rubber flap mounted to the back of the deck and it does a pretty good job.

Even 2.5 acres will probably only put about 100 hours per year on that 140. Carefully used and maintained it could last quite a while. As the originator has learned, pulling actual implements with that size machine isn't a good idea but a striper would be nothing. That said, I wouldn't want to spend that many hours a year riding a D140 but that's just me.
