Large dead oak trees = brush piles, firewood, and tractor time !! Pictures

Last couple of years have been really hard on our oak trees here in Texas. Purchased a new Still 044 Magnum with 28" bar and carbide chain just for the occasion. We have been cutting and piling large dead trees for past several weekends. Got some good firewood out of the deal if I can just handle the chunks to split them. My Father In Law found these old log Tongs in the barn and I used them this weekend for the first time. Really makes fast work of hooking on the these large slabs and moving them around. Had a great day today.

Nice saw! Looks like you will have some good firewood too. Sorry the weather has been hard on your trees. Did you count rings to see about how old that tree was?

I bought one, the cheaper version with spray on carbide. I wanted it to flush cut stumps. didn't work out well.

I don't see how buyin carbide chains to cut clean wood is economic. Sharpening chains is neither rocket sciene or an onerous job - takes me about 10 minutes, which includes prepping the saw, putting it in vice, mounting guide, to do a 20" loop.

The guy in the picture is actually a buddy of mine. He felled the trees because he has had more experience with that than me. The chain was around $179 and we hit a piece of steel (did not see old pipe beside tree) the first day we used it. Damaged a few teeth, but still running strong.

slice a thick chunk of that last log and make a nice coffee table, gorgeous wood.
What kind of oak tree? None I've cut around here have that color. Bark is familiar though.

got anything planned for that humongous stump?

Now I'm wondering if that trunk is only reddish down by the bottom, minerals from the ground?
