I have an L3830 with the LA723 FEL. I'm planning to purchase a piece of equipment to be delivered, the crate will weigh 1000 pounds. I have a set of forks I can attach to the bucket that are rated for 2000 pounds.

I'm trying to figure out if I can offload it myself or I need to spend an extra $75 for a lift gate.

The specs for the FEL say the lift capacity is "1400 pounds (500 mm Forward)". Does anyone know what the 500mm forward qualifier means?

Better yet, anyone know for sure if the FEL will handle the load?

We have the same rig, L3830, LA723, Quick Attach pallet forks. 1000 - 1100 lbs. is the max ours can do. I have read about ways to up the ante by messing with the hydraulic relief valve, but haven't tried it. I've been a little disappointed with the capacity of the loader. When we bought the tractor, the next larger size, L4330, could take the heavier loader, LA835.

Thanks for the info. Since it's borderline, I'll go ahead and spend the $75. After spending $8K on a mill, I guess $75 won't hurt at all ... :)

It would be interesting to test it to find out for sure, if you could, because it's close. The way I found out, and you'd think I'd have written it down, was when I was shingling a roof. Asphalt shingle bundles are pretty heavy, I think they were about 85 pounds each. I went to unload the pallet from the truck that was loaded by a forklift truck at the lumber yard. Surprise! Had to keep offloading onto another pallet until it would finally pick it up.

Cliff-

I used to drive a sheetrock boom truck for a lumber company and one of my primary jobs was delivering asphalt roof shingles. The boom allowed me to lift the pallets up to the eaves of the roof for the contractor's guys to unload and walk to the ridge, saving a lot of ladder work. A pallet full is deceptively heavy. As I remember 33 bundles at 85# each plus the oak pallet came out to somewhere around 2800 - 3000#

If your forks attach to the front of your bucket like you said:
I have a set of forks I can attach to the bucket that are rated for 2000 pounds.
Then your lift capacity will be greatly reduced because the load is so far forward, plus the weight of the bucket and forks themselves. Add to all that the trailer you will have to unload from will be about 4' high.

500mm forward is the center of gravity of the load as measured from the center of the bucket.

You might be able to get it off, but the back tires may come off the ground too! That would be a lot of excitement with an 8K mill on the front!!

Many, if not most, of the relief valves are set lower than factory spec (or they have drifted down over time with use). A 0-5000 psi gage and adaptor is about 20-50 bucks depending on quality / size etc. A good tool to have on hand. Connect it to the outlet hose from the loader and lever it to activate that circuit, hold as the relief valve opens and take your reading.

The relief valve is under your right foot as you sit on the tractor. It's that block that has the hoses going to it (the one you are supposed to turn a knob on if you remove the loader). The pressure is adjusted by shims behind the spring. You access that be removing the bottom plug on the right side. Not much fluid comes out, but the shims / spring will. Note the order add a shim, reassemble and recheck. Done in 30 min total. Shims are available from messicks.com online or your dealer. 0.1mm of shim is 37 psi.

We purchased a kitchen from IKEA. Total shipping weight of all of the components was 3540 pounds on 3 pallets. I unloaded them without problem with my L3130 w/LA723 and pallet forks. The relief valve is set slightly over the factory standard at nearly 2670#. I have loaded rear tires which helps balance the load.

That works out to 1200# per pallet although one pallet seemed heavier than the others. The only problem was that IKEA's pallets are not made to US dimensions. They are approximately 2.5 x 8 ft. and were loaded end on into a box van. I had to hook onto them end on and pull them out onto the lift gate then come at them from the side. The truck crew admitted that they had problems unloading them with the lift gate. They usually unloaded them manually a few pieces at a time.
