As I recall mine had shims somewhere on the axle but now looking in the shop manual, it does not say anything about shims. The WSM shows only installing seal into axle flange, inserting axle through seal, install outer bearing on axle, install the 2 half-ring collars, pop on the ring gear (which has a relief that will trap the collars), install the inner bearing, use grease to hold the new o-ring of the axle flange, put the assembly in place and tighten the bolts diagonally to 30 - 34 Nm or 22 to 25 ft-lb. no shims are shown in the illustration nor are they mentioned in the text. I am almost certain, however, mine had shims(s) on the pocket in the gear case where the inner bearing seats. In fact I remember putting mine together, then before tightening spotting the shim(s) in the box where I was reaching to get the bolts so I had to start over. The only place they show shims is on the bottom bevel gear. They describe how to set backlash between the 2 bevel gears by varying this bottom shim stack.
