I have a L4610 with the hydrostatic transmission and a front end loader. While using the tractor over the weekend I noticed a trail of leaking oil. I stopped and looked under the tractor and the hydrualic/tranmission oil was running out of what appears to be a fitting with a small drain hole to prevent fluids from collecting in the clutch housing. The oil continued to run out until it appears to have emptied the transmission/hydraulics (I managed to collect around 7 gallons). Any ideas of what has happen and also the repair? Thanks in advance.

MMCCoy,

What happened when the tractor was set up was a spacer was left out of the front axle drive shaft. You may have found it in the toolbox behind the seat between the fenders - looks like a 1 1/2" x 4" piece of pipe.

This spacer holds another thinner spacer in position against a lip seal on the front drive shaft assembly and the two keep the fluid from leaking. When the spacer is left out, the thin spacer can move away from the seal and cause the transmission to dump at the bellhousing.

You can do the repair yourself or the dealer could do it for you. What is involved is dropping the front drive shaft down - two roll pins once you collapse the cover and slide the coupler to the middle. Then, reinstall the spacer and reassemble the drive shaft and it's cover - about 20 minutes when all goes well.

Good luck!

You were right. The only difference was that the spacer was not in the tool box; but had been incorrectly installed on the front drive shaft between the two couplers, instead of in the bell housing. The first dealer I contacted told be the transmission would have to be removed at a minimum of 11 hours labor charge. The second dealer I contacted told me about the spacer. Was able to repair myself for the price of two gallons of hydrualic oil. Needless to say , the second dealer will be getting all of my business from now on even with the extra 30 mile drive.

This should have be under warranty should it not?
