Kubota L4610 HSTC, International 2400, Hesston 1280,
It seems my engine races to a much higher rpm on cold startups than when it was new. Cold starup being around 35 degrees, where we live.
It also got to where it might have to turn over several times more when cold, so we started cycling the glow plugs 2 or 3 times when cold so it would fire on the first or second turn. Could that have a bearing on the higher rpm.
It does fall immediately back to normal rpm, but I dislike hearing it run up while cold & no oil pressure.
Is there any adjustment to overcome this?

Mine is the same. I also cycle the glow plugs a couple of times when it's cold, and it does initially surge but drops back to idle within a second or two. I have always figured that's just normal.

I wouldn't appreciate a start up at 3,000 rpm but I think most have agreed that start up at 1,500 or so is not harmful to a Kubota engine. There has been much discussion on this topic and as I recall, Kubota may even recommend start up at a throttle position higher than idle.

Mine gets started at around 1,500 rpm and the results of Blackstone Lab oil analysis shows no abnormal wear after several years. For what a tractor engine costs, oil analysis every year or two is sure peace of mind for less than a twenty dollar bill.

The manual for my model says cold start with 1/2 throttle, that's about 1500rpm. The other thing you could do is use synthetic oil, the primary reason I use it is because of cold starting oil flow.

Thanks everyone. I don't think ours is passing 1/2 throttle. We did look in our manual to see if it said to set to 1/2 throttle, and it does. We have always just started it at idle. On my old International, it says to only turn the fuel on/off lever 1/2 on to start cold, so it would not get too much fuel (which makes it sound like a popping johnny) , so I was under the impression too much fuel was not good for starting.
