OK, so i wanted a mx5100 but in australia that means no backhoe (per my other post)

So i have 2 options - a L4240 or a L4600

the main diferences are the l4240 has some nice things like a better seat, dash board, hst+, auto throttle control, bigger front axle, can take the bigger FeL LA854, and can have a mid mower

L4600 HAS A couple more hp (bugger all ) and is cheaper.

i guess i am trying to find out if i am missing anything.

the l4240 would be nice because i could have the mower on underneath and the BH attached to the back (any issues with that?)

mostly i would be doing grass cutting, BH work and FEL spoil removal. Have 50 acres that is a little hilly.

If i have covered it myself above, then i guess its down to price vs features i want

I know that down under things are done a little different but mowing with a backhoe on can really cut down the places you can get close to! For some they might go to a bigger 90" three point hitch finish mower.

The stronger FEL on the L4240 is a big plus. From what I've heard, dealers in Australia typically install a 4-in-1 type bucket, even on compact tractors like these, which eats into the lifting capacity because of their weight. The 4-in-1 is indeed handy, but given the choice, I'd go for more effective payload.

The L4240 also has the upgraded HST setup that owners seem to really like.

I sure wouldn't want to mow with a backhoe on...

I like basic, so I'd go with the L4600. :)

Thanks guys,

yeah, a mid mower and back hoe probably isn't the way to go.

but the bigger bucket seems to be a big plus - i also read about a few issues with the supports snapping on the smaller LA7xx FEL

guess it will come down to $$

As far as the extra HP I don't think you would notice it.Both tractors have the same engine, according to the Kubota website,so it is only minor differences between the two.My vote would be for the 4240 as it is a heavier, stronger tractor.Having just downgraded from a 3240 to a B2620 I will say it really makes you appreciate the features of the Grand L's.The bucket linkage on the FEL is one very nice feature as it gives a lot of rollback on the bucket. The HST plus transmission is also very nice to have.If you search you will find threads on Grand L's verses other Kubota tractors. Most people seem to favour the Grand L's,especially those that have used them.

As a recent L4240 owner, I can only say REALLY good things about it. It is strong AND comfortable! That's a LOT of fun when you're out working...

I would go with the L4240 for the reasons you mentioned. I am not sure if you can get a MMM on a L4240. I doubt you would notice the few more ponies a L4600 has.

I went with the 4240 mainly because I'm planning on keeping it. Not for 5 or 10 years, even 20 years, I don't plan on selling it. Because of that I'll have a lifetime to either enjoy or miss the extra features. You can't add most of them after the fact and the ones that you can will drive up the cost to the point where you should have just got the GL. I think your real question is do you plan on owning it for a very long time. If so do you value the extras? Of course if you have a budget then it could just be out of the question. For me the HST+ is something I would never go without, it's just that nice.

I also recommend the 4240, the hst+ alone is worth the price increase over the 4600. The increased loader capacity will also be very useful if you plan on using the loader a lot.
