I'm thinking of getting a L4400, but haven't decided on tires yet. Leaning toward the R4's. Will definitely be using snow chains. Anyone have any experiences with clearances for chains (front and back) for the R4's, R1's, or turfs on this machine?

Thanks,
Howard

Hi HC
I've had norse type ice chains for 4+ years on my rear ag tires on my 4400. Fasten them on well and there's enough clearance. There's a couple of pics on the forum I think you can access from the link below, about 4 posts down from the top. Also instructions how to put them on. These chains are very aggressive and will probably last a lifetime. Don't use them on an asphalt driveway, as they will gouge and mark the surface.

you won't need front chains

I think the R4s are not as tall as the R1s, at least they are on the GLs. I run a pretty aggressive chain on my 4240 with R1s and there's plenty of clearance. If the tires are set in the narrow position the side wall could rub though so I have them set wide.

Thanks for the feedback all. I have already rear chains from a previous tractor so I'll try 'em out and see if they fit the L4400. If not I'll take a look at the norse type chains - they do look mean. (-:

Both Tellefsdal and Aquiline make those style chains. I'm not sure if you can find an internet dealer for the Tellefsdal chains or not. I do believe they are called "supers". I d know you can find the Aquiline version, the "talon" on-line. A very heavy chain designed for decades of use on a CUT.

I think simonmeridew and I have the same chains. I don't know about the Aquiline brand but the Tellefsdal's have a side tensioning cam on both sides. It makes it real easy to tighten them up. I think the distributor is out of New Hampshire.
