Case-IH Farmall 45A, Kubota M8540 Narrow, New Holland TN 65, Bobcat 331, Ford 1920, 1952 John Deere M, Allis Chalmers B, Bombardier Traxter XT, Massey Harris 81RC and a John Deere 3300 combine, Cub Cadet GT1554
I'm looking at a simple, bare bones 2wd utility tractor to hook a mid mount post pounder to and to ted and rake hay. I know the L4600 is replacing the L4400 but I'm curious what the big difference is between the two and if its worth paying more for the newer 4600. Also, what is the main differences between the MX4700 and the L4600?

I've looked at Kubotas website but they don't make it very easy to compare different models and since I haven't really followed Kubota very close over the years I am still fairly new to their tractors.

Can not speak to the Post pounder application for any of these models, but having just purchased the L4600 I can say:

Cost: In my area, L4400 is same as L4600...penny for penny. The MX4700 was about $2000 more (I was comparing 4WD equipped with appropriate loaders).

Gross HP/PTO: About 1 HP more for L4600 over L4400. And 1 more HP for the MX4700 over the L4600. All are non-turbo 4 cylinder diesels.

Style/Features: L4600 is the same new style/feature set as the MX4700.

MX4700 has about a minimum 6' wheelbase...the other 2 can set up about 6" narrower. I was only looking at R-4 setups. (I.E, seeing how 5' implements would position themselves). Can not speak to conventional Ag tire widths.

3PT: Cat 1 for L4400 and L4600. Cat 1/2 for MX4700

Weight: About 3000# for L4400, add ~100# for L4600 and another ~200# for MX4700.

Loaders: You did not mention if that is in the cards. L4400 and L4600 are different, but not by much. MX4700 adds about 40% more. This is one of the biggest differences.

Hope this helps a bit. On Kubota site, if you go to the specifications page, you can view/download a .pdf that has more details.

I have also been looking at bare bones 2WD tractors in this size range. I think for your somewhat "real farm" use the MX4700 might be better. It can be ordered with 28" ag tires versus 26" and has a few more inches ground clearance, I believe. Also being heavier built it should stand up to the forces of the post pounder better. Do you know if the front axles are adjustable on these 2WD Kubotas?

What is the price difference between the two and do you know approx what they will be asking for price in your area? dwelshans says about $2K more for the MX, but maybe a good part of that was eaten up by a heavier loader?

Have you considered the Workmaster/A Series from Case IH and NH? These seem to be quite bare bones and heavier built than the Kubota. Maybe lower price too, I was thinking around $14K for the 45 models.

Let us know what you decide to buy, if anything. Good luck.

I'm waiting for a price on the Farmall 45A but I won't buy another New Holland/Ford till my local NH dealer has better management.

I have never actually seen a L4400/4600 around here to be able to compare. If the pounder is mounted properly then there shouldn't be too much force transferred to the tractor. No worse then any loader at least. But I would agree that I think the MX would be a little more beefier then the L series. I am waiting for prices though on everything I'm looking at. Should be hearing back today about them.

The taller tires really won't matter much for this tractors application so its basically going to come down to which models will work best and at what price. I have another thread asking for user input on the 45A.

As far as the 'strength' of the tractor itself, the L4400/L4600 and Mx4700 should be very close. They are built on the same platform (grand L) and share many components. They both use the same rear end housing, and much of the transmission is the same as well. The MX does have a little beefier front axle and as such a stouter loader. For what you describe I'd go with the L and save the extra $$$.

Im looking at low houred diesels but for something decent with 1000+ hours locally their $10k+. I got two quotes today on a farmall 45A of $14,600 and $16k. Financing is 0% for 72 months so its a case where i dont need to tie too much money up at once leaving me freedom to buy other things. Im just waiting for the kubota prices to come in so i can make a decision. At $14,600 i cant see buying used for a bare bones unit.

The kubota mx4700 would be easier to attach the pounder to. Does the L's and mx4700 have the same mounting points for a loader? My pounder will mount to the right side where the loader support would bolt to.
