L4330 HST Not sure what the clutch is for??

Hi Guys, excuse my ignorance but... I just brought home a big brother(L4330) for my BX. I skipped through the manual, but, didn't see any instructions on the clutch except to depress when starting. Also why the hook for the pedal? Thanks for the insight.

Is the hook for when towing? I believe the pedal is kind of a last ditch thing if the hydro failed.

Page 36 - depress clutch pedal when shifting between ranges.
Page 37 - depress clutch when shifting to and from 4wd.
Page 47 - when the clutch is depressed the PTO disengages.
Page 90 - when storing tractor for extended periods Keep clutch disengaged with the hook. The clutch plate may rust making clutch disengagement impossible at the next operation.

To say it a different way...

You use the clutch to engage the pto after you have selected the pto when you have something attached to the pto, like a PHD or rotary cutter or whatever...

You may not always have to engage the clutch when you change speed ranges, On my B2910 I often change ranges while drifting to a stop, just before the tractor stops. If this does not work I use the clutch.

Y0ur hook is better than the little wooden block that came with my tractor, which is used to hold the clutch pedal down if the tractor is going to be stored for a long time. I generally run mine every couple weeks in winter so I have not bothered with using that block. I might us a hook...but they did not include one on the B2910... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

My dealer told me to use the clutch pedal hook if I was not going to use the tractor for several weeks or more. He said that the Kubota clutch was "still made from organic materials" and that the clutch would "freeze up" if stored without using the pedal hook. The friction plate will rust to the pressure plate and have to be broken loose. He says it's "a pain in the neck to fix".

I'm curious about the PTO engagment, the tractor I normally use has a hydraulic indendant pto. Its kind of annoying sometimes as you can't feather a PTO load. I stalled it with the baler the other day. USed to an old 2 stage.

I use the clutch to do as you say, feather in a PTO implement that has a large starting torque relative to my tractor. Typically I use it on the mower but not on the PHD or Harley Rake. I like having the ability to do that. I rarely clutch between ranges or 4WD unless it is "hanging" up, then I clutch it to roll the gears.
