L4300 PTO upgrade

I have a question after having the PTO upgraded to remove the ratcheting noise.

Without the ratcheting over ride feature is there an issue with engaging the PTO if you have something like a rotary cutter that has not stopped moving when you are ready to go again? I have been throttling down the engine before putting the PTO out of gear to slow down the rotary cutter before I put it out of gear. That way it stops much sooner than if it was put out of gear at full speed. I知 concerned that putting it in gear again while the out put shaft is still turning fast, driven by the rotary cutter, may be hard on the PTO system because the input shaft will have to be up to the speed of the output shaft immediately.

Do you wait till the implement stops turning or do you just put it in gear and go?
If you do, do hear any noise when engaging it?

Your title said L4300 instead of L3400... but after reading "ratcheting noise", I knew which one. When I take the PTO out of gear, I'll push the clutch in when the engine is at 2300rpms and release the PTO cable and if I wanted the mower to stop fast... I'll run it into some more grass. I'm talking about a field and not a lawn, so maybe not the same thing. To me, (read that as un-educated), I will try my best not to have the PTO cams make that ratchet noise. To me, that's just metal slapping on metal and it will wear out.


After re-reading your post... You had the PTO upgraded to remove the ratcheting noise... which I think only raises the oil level so that the cams are doing the same thing but it's under oil and so it's quieter. Have you tried to let the clutch out slowly (or slow your engine down) when you re-engauge the mower? I assume you use the clutch to put it in and out of gear...
