I've had more troubles than I expected with this tractor(transmission, motor rebuild). It's in the shop now for the second time for front axle troubles. I hear this grinding noise and then lose four wheel drive and the front wheels lock up even with the 4 lever out. I noticed they use the exact same axle on the L2900. seems they should have beefed this one up. I'd like to upgrade to a L5040GST i keep thinking there's nothing left to fix on this tractor, and then there is.

That's a pretty serious piece of equipment to have so much extensive/expensive repairs on. How many hours are on this tractor and were all these failures lubrication related?

it had 2078 hr's when I got it and now has 2410. none of the problems were lubrication related. maybe it was abused before I got it. I should just trade it.

Mine has about 100. Sounds like I'm safe. Good luck with yours, they're a great tractor.

Haybaler, you mentioned you where going to upgrade past the L48 to the M59 for things like mowing.....and now you are talking about the homeowner 40 series for your landscaping business(?). The different classes of the above mentioned machinesIs commercial use of your current machine the basis of these mechanical problems? I wouldn't consider the 4400 for commercial landscaping work, not even close to L48 or M59. Upgrade if that is the problem, but don't expect commercial performance from homeowner grade equipment.

I don't consider the L series to be homeowner use at all. The BX's are for homeowners. The L48 is designed for the abuse of the hoe. a L5040 should last me a good decade with maintenance and normal USE.

Check the price of the L5040 with BH90 and compare it to L48....not much difference in price, but huge difference in machine. If you are in the business, make sure your machine choice is correct. I almost made the same mistake you might make until I did a thorough comparison, at which time it was clear I needed the TLB and not a L series with backhoe as an attachment. Just some helpful advice.
