Tractor
Kubota L3130DT, Kubota L185DT, JD LX277
My neighbor has a
L3130 DT,
R4 tires loaded,
513 QA Fel, and
boom pole for sale.
$16250.00

Tractor has 46 hours on it. He has only used the FEL on the tractor to clear about 1/2 acre. Has never used PTO. He paid around $17400.00 plus tax at 7% for a total of around $18,564.00. Getting divorced and needs to sell for payoff.

My brother-in-law is interested in buying the tractor and asked for my opinion. And I told him to let me price a new one which with the same set-up would be the exact same cost
$17400.00 only he would have to pay tax.

Now all this being said he would rather have R1 Ag tires which would put the price at $16680.00 plus tax.

He will most likely pay cash if he buys the used one.

So here is the deal:

Used:
L3130 DT, R4 tires loaded, 513 QA FEL, 46 hours, boom pole.

$16250 cash.

New:
L3130DT, R4 loaded, 513 QA Fel.

$17,400.00 plus tax for total $18,564.00

New:
L3130DT, R1 tires, 513 QA Fel.

$16,680 plus tax for a total of $17,847.

I told him if he was going to pay cash buy the used. I have watched the neighbor use this tractor and he has not been rough on it. But for $1500.00 more he can get a new one with the R1's.

What do you think, which one would you buy?

If he buys new I will talk him into getting the 723 loader for about $400. more or a Woods 1012 for the same as the 513.

Kubota is currently offeering 0% for 24 months on the L series. If it was me making the purchase I would purchase the new unit with a LA723 loader. This way payment for the unit would be spread over 24 months. That assuming one pays of the Kubota loan prior to 24 months to be able to take advantage of the 0%.

I ditto what gator said. Go with new and that way you get the full 3 year warranty plus you get a little rapport with the dealer and may be able to get some extras thrown in such as 50 hour service and free hats. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I would also go with the stronger loader as well.

I would also advise passing on this tractor. I always advise against the 3130 anyway as being marginally powered for its weight, and prefer the 3430 or 3830. (This has NOTHING to do with the very disgruntled Ramon49). Also try to spring for the 723 loader, and at least the GST tranny. HST is fantastic for most applications too.

It just seems to me that a Grand L with an FST would be like a Lexus with a stick shift. Depends what you're doing with it of course, we don't really have a lot to go on here.

That price seems way too high to me for a gear tractor. The 723 loader is far superior.

It seems to me he should be able to get an HST with 723 loader for close to that price. I'd suggest a new machine with the 0% financing. If you ever have a problem the dealer may treat you better on a warranty claim.

Good Luck,
Kevin

CT tree guy I have read many of your posts about the L3130 and you always state it is under powered etc. Well not many people can afford a L3430 or 3830. I mean a extra 2 or 3 grand is alot of money to most of us. I personally own a new L3130 with L723 loader and BH90 hoe and have run into to NO under power problems as you state mowing or tilling. I'm tring to say this in a nice way also, But If someone is inquiring on a certain model tractor that is most likely what he or she can afford.

Power is relative to the task for most people. And for most people, if power was THE issue, most of them would have an L4400 like me. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The truth is that most people buying small tractors pay a lot of money for HST and tilt steering wheels instead of and often at the expense of power. So in general, I'd hate to say that any tractor is 'underpowered' unless it is incapable of doing what it was intended to do, with the implements it was intended to use.

That being said, I agree with buying new. You get exactly what you want, you get a warranty and you spend only a little more in cases like this. And if the buyer has cash for the used one then he should have cash for the new one. Nothing like not being in debt.

L3130 -

I hear what you're saying loud and clear, money does not grow on trees (or I'd be driving a Holder 872HF). I try to be very careful when I talk about the 3130 and its D1503 engine. I hope I've never said categorically that the 3130 is underpowered, because my point is simply that it's on the borderline on the power-to-weight scale. After all, it is a considerably heavier tractor than for instance the B7800 which is also around 30 hp.

I've never stated categorically that it has "power problems", I'll leave that to Ramon. It's just always seemed a shame, as I've stated before, that apparently Kubota derived the 1503 from the identically-stroked 1703 found in the 3430 by under-boring it from 87mm to 84mm, just so they could offer a 31 HP engine to round out the Grand L line. (I have similar objections to that red-haired stepchild the V2203-MB, found in the 4630, arguably the most questionable choice in the Grand L line. As I've said before, the 4630 has the same torque and displacement as the 4330, yet costs a couple thousand more).

So I don't always recommend the "bigger" tractor. Between the 4630 and 4330, get the 4330. I do find it a real shame that in exchange for simply giving you (in the 3430) the same bore and pistons as are found in the rest of the Grand L's, they charge you $1900-2000 more. I guess that's marketing for you. All of the above just makes it hard for me to give the 3130 a ringing endorsement, and makes me a little disgusted at how marketing works.

Equipment manufacturers who specify Kubota engines seem to have the same feelings about the D1503 engine, and specify much more often its "normally" bored cousin, the D1703 that's found in the 3430.

I know that not everyone feels that he or she can "afford" a 3430 or a 3830, and it's not my place or intent to imply that they can. I'm just making observations to try to help people make informed decisions, and I hope I don't offend anyone in the process. That really isn't my intent either.

It's just that if you can swing it, you'll probably never regret having the extra power, and as I've said before, when and if you ever sell the tractor, you get most of your money back anyway and have enjoyed the extra power all that time for not much money at all.

Sorry if I ticked you (and any other 3130 owners) off, that's not my intention, just an understandable by-product of my observations.

Back to new vs. used. If the buyer has cash and the price for cash or the 0%/36 months is the same, he should go for the new at the 0/36, putting the remainder of his cash in short term CDs or other investments, thus decreasing the net cost of the tractor. I would guess that waving cash under the dealers nose might lower the price compared to the 0/36.

Yeah, sorry about that. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Maybe I'll have to stop commenting on 3130's ...

(Gee, ya think?? )
