L3130 hydraulic oil filter change

I have an L3130 DT and want to change the hydraulic oil filter. In the service manual it shows to drain the oil first. Can the filter be replaced without draining the fluid? Thanks.

Put a shop vac on the fill port to create a vacuum. It will minimize fluid loss when you change the filter.

You can put a vacuum cleaner hose on the fill opening and do your job. Have done it on my 327 Chevy motor for a oil pan plug

As noted, the shop vac trick can make the job a lot less messy but you will still lose some fluid. Be aware that the filters can be VERY hard to get off and you may need a very stout filter wrench to do it.

This is especially true for first time filter changes. In many cases, the factory applies gray engine paint to the filters which can make them very difficult to remove.

I always loosen the filter slightly first before doing anything else.

Yes, brand new is worse by far due to the paint and the factory gorilla that installs them, but it is still a relatively higher pressure filter (w/a very stout housing) and as such needs to be on tighter than many may expect. Given the model in question is ~15-20+ years old, it won't be the "new" issue here...
