My 2006 L2800 HST PTO is not properly disengaging when I select the off position on the PTO lever. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I suspect it's a simple cable adjustment but I'm not sure how to do it. Any advise would be helpful; the manual does not mention this.

Yesterday I was putting in fence post and the posthole auger got buried because I could'nt shut the PTO off. Had to disconnect the PTO shaft from the tractor and use a pipe wrench with a hugh cheater bar to thread the auger back out. What a pain :-( Not eager to repeat that again soon.

Thx! :)

Check the cable that connects the pto lever to the linkage, they will sometimes get a "kink" in them at one end. Simple to replace and should be covered under the basic or drivetrain warranty.
BTW, take the cable with you to the dealer, they will have to retain it if replaced under warranty.

Next time you may want to try pushing the clutch in if it will not dis-engage when using the PHD.

The L2800/3400 HST has a ratcheting over-ride clutch in the PTO that has a slight rake angle. This makes it hard to disengage under load. This may be why the PTO did not disengage while the auger was under load. You should use the clutch to stop if the PTO is under load. I would also check the cables though and be sure it is adjusted correctly.

The PTO on these units is not independent like the higher end models that will disengage under load.

Issues solved! Two problems; PTO wiring harness safety cut-out connectors were interfering with the PTO switch (poorly routed - factory job) and the lever + return spring into the transmission was corroded making return harder. I also took the cable out and lubed it. All works fine. Time to dig some more holes :)
