2008, L2800, HST, 473 FEL / Ford 8N, (well maybe only a 7.5N!)
Help needed on L2800HST value adjustment.

Well, I visited the dealer today with expectation of closing the deal. Previous we had agreed on a price of 15,600 for tractor and 463 FEL.

When I looked at the tractor it didn't look sparkling new. It had 2.3 hrs on the clock. When I inqurired on how long they had it - they checked records and came back with Sept 2006. After talking to the technician they had taken it to the county fair, for display, etc. Sounds like the road show tractor.

Costmetically, the paint was a little lighter than the new models, things like the cloth shielding over the FEL hydraulic lines were silver (not black anymore). Slight rub marks on the FEL paint. Just little things.

Well I was quite dissapointed, even though 2.3 hours is low - it just didn't "feel new" and didn't have that new look. I know it's a tractor but...you know how it is...the new toy that I'd keep in the garage because I wan't to keep it 30yrs and it still look nice.

I can get one for 15,300 a bit farther away that was uncrated and built about 3 months ago. Well if I entertain this one, I think the value needs adjusting. How much do you think you would want for a discount on one like this?

My wife asked - why hadn't they sold it in 2+ yrs - I couln't answer that one.

Thanks again.

Paul

I'd get the one from a bit further away. Small updates and fixes to the design are always done as the years go by. You are paying new price, you might as well get brand new.

Get them to throw in delivery from the further away place.

I've never liked how a tractor year is labelled pretty much as the year it was sold in rather than the model year it was produced for - like cars. It is a bit of a scam to me if you ask me.

Also consider for the $1000 more the L3400. You will get that $1000 back come resale time - if you ever do resell (even in 30 years!). You will never regret a few more HP - get them while you can.

I was always concerned with how long the machine was in the yard when I was shopping for my L3400. I was shopping for several months and would note the Serial Numbers on the tractors in stock. I ended up buying from a dealer that sells less tractors than some of the larger dealers but purchased a unit that was crated and stored in a warehouse. I garage the tractor and felt like I did not want a tractor that was exposed to the weather for months. I would rather pay a little extra for a machine that was not left outside for a long time.

So, I second the recommendation to pass on the tractor that has been sitting for 2 years...

I would see how bad they want to move the tractor. It could come out to your advantage if they want to get the price down. If you took one home and used it one time for a couple of hours, parked it in the shed and decided one year later to trade the hardly used tractor in, how much would the dealer knock off the trade in value compared to what you paid new?

A tractor that has been around the lot for 2 years should be a good bit cheaper than one just out of the crate. My 2 cents

Excellent perspectives.

1) If paying this price - it should be "New New". I guess we need a differenct term now for "new"!!!!

2) Rental returns around here sell for about 13,500 unnegotiated, with 30 to 70 hrs on them, but they are 2008 and did not have a front loader on them till back from rental. So it seems this miight be the neiborhood of "fair price". Rentals more hours but 3 months uncrated vs. 2006, 2hrs, 2 yrs uncrated, with UV exposure.

I'll see if they are willing to come down. Logically this makes sense - though the dealer only seem's to see the 2 hour part (funny how that works). How do you effectively negotiate on this one with a dealer?

I do like the 2hrs and 2 yrs ownership analogy - I think the dealer would look at that as a minimum of $3K lower if they were to buy back. I wonder how close to cost $13.5K is. Seems they should be happy to walk out this one for what they paid for it.

Paul,

I tried out a L2800HST with loaded R4s, L463 loader and QA bobcat style coupler and the machine was in similar shape. The plastic had faded, there were nicks and scratches on the bucket and 3pt hitch and it was very apparent that the machine had sat there for at least a full winter. I don't remember the hours.

I loved the machine, but the dealer wanted $18K and change and would not budge when I mentioned the faded plastic parts (black plastic on the reaer fenders I seem to recall was verey faded). I realize that its only a tractor and that my own machine is no peach (thinking of trading), but I was still a little puzzled why they thought they could charge such a premium price.

Yeah the dealer may not want to come down on the price of a older-new tractor with fading plastic and paint, but you try and trade the tractor back in and you are going to hear about every little scratch and speck of dirt knocking the value down. If the dealer does not come down on the price I would propably ease on down the road to the next dealer to see how I am treated. My 2 cents

From a Dealer perspective - the negatives of a two-year-old new machine - may be in the technology, fuel efficiency, ergonomic designs, etc... In other words - while being new - it's not the latest model, and pricing should reflect this.

As to why the Tractor has sat for so long - there could be several reasons, but poor marketing has to be high on the list as we all know supply usually meets demand eventually.

I get where you are coming from when you say you just don't get that new feeling - I just bought a repo tractor with only 12 hours on it, and I didn't get the warm and fuzzy there either...

My 2 cents...

Good luck!

Just an update on negotiations.

Well the dealer didn't seem to interested to reflect the cosmetic degradation (UV - scratches, etc) in the price. I thought a fair price was about 13,500 considering I see 2008
"new" units sell for that. But they just stated thier profit margin wouldn't allow for $13.5K - well the longer they hold it the less they will get.

So I guess I'll have to shop elswhere, at the same time I am going to check out the MF 1528 because of the 3pt valve issue with the L2800/3400 that seems to be systemic and apparently Kubota isn't backing their product in this situation (see posts in Kubota Owning Operating).

Thanks for the perspectives though - it's definately not worth a 2008 competive price.
