I changed the filter and fluid on my tractor, put in the amount the dealer told me my tractor would take and yet I see nothing on the tiny sight glass, experience has told me this means either it is overfilled or there isnt enough. Experience has also shown me that trying to add to it alone ( like Ive done in the past ) without watching the sight glass can easily lead to an overfill of epic proportion.

There has to be a better way of checking where Im at?

Thanks

How much did the dealer tell you to add? What is the system capacity according to the book? I'd have to check but I think the capacity may be eight gallons. I may be mistaken but for some reason that number sticks in my head. Since you can't ever fully drain a system that means it would hit capacity at a bit less than that.

While SUDT is good stuff, it's clear and difficult to see so I use Chevron Synthetic All Weather THC. It's Kubota approved and it's orange (of all things) so I can see it. You can buy dye specifically for hydraulic fluid at a JD dealer but it's not cheap.

I changed the hydraulic and transmission filters this weekend, along with, oil, oil filter, air filter and fuel filter. I have not done a full hydraulic oil change yet, so when adding make-up oil I could see it against the paper white background. I poured in a little at a time. It is very time consuming. It does help to actually have it in a dark garage with a white LED flashlight on the site glass. Helped me anyway.

I think my Kubota warranty would expire if I put JD green dye in it :)

It's actually red dye. ;-p

Just make sure to tell anybody you have work on it or sell it to. They might wig out you filled it up with ATF outherwise.

I overfilled mine, doing my 50hr. Once I drained out about a gallon, you could totally see the difference at the sight glass. One other place to check, look down into the fill plug with a flashlight, it should not be full. The orange dye would be my choice. ;)
