I would definitely go with the L170. The LX665 New Holland that I run can be a bit short on power when at the limits pushing snow and digging dirt. Traction never seems to be a problem, just power. I would be very concerned about having the non-turbo engine that the L160 uses for our needs.

Granted, I am using an older LX665 New Holland skid steer but it is essentially the same frame and horsepower as the newer L-series machines. The engines on the newer LS170 & L170 do feel more responsive. I believe that New Holland is using a wastegate turbo which spools up faster...and they sound a bit different.

We have been pleased with our New Holland. It is an early '94 machine, I believe. Every other New Holland that I have driven has controls which are considerably easier to use than ours. The foot pedals on our machine are stiff and hard to feather.

That is my two cents. Good luck with your upcoming purchase.

Thank you Equipment Junkie for your response
How do you like your LX665, how many hours do you have on your machine?
what was the heviest thing you lifted with your machine?
The reason I am going to buy a NH is becuase I have 2 utility tractors.
other than some minor things, they have been great!!so i can only assume the same for their skidds.
Thanks again

We like our LX665 except that the foot pedals are a bit stiff which make them mean to feather. The dealer was able to take care of some of the stiffness, but all other New Hollands that I have operated were much better.

Our LX665 has about 770 hours on it. Not a lot.

About five years ago, one of my coworkers tried to lift a 3,000-lb. crate onto a truck. He got the load up about bed-height which sent the skid steer over on its face! It wasn't pretty. The only reason the skid steer was being used was due to excessive ice which made the forklift helpless.

I sold my landscaping business this past spring, I had been SERIOUSLY looking into a NH L170. I liked it because of the capacities and the lower center of gravity. The flow could handle all the attachments I would want to use, combine that with a counterweight kit, and a cab kit- would have been an overall good machine.

I did some work for a commcial builder a few years back and he used his Cat 246 to help us unload some sod off my dump trucks and couldn't lift the full pallet of sod and I think it spec'd at 2200lbs lift, the NH170 specs at 1700lbs, unless your using large rolls of sod, you may end up unloading some pieces of sod off by hand. Good Luck!!

The LX565 (LS160)..LX665 (LS170) Stick with the L160 NH increased engine displacement a couple years ago making the advantage of the turbo in the 170 minimal. You will have no lifting advantage over the 160 with the 170 the same goes for bucket break-out force. Tractic effort (pushing power) will be slightly better as well as cycle times in the L170. Dealer cost difference is around $1,500. You may want to wait for the L175 to come out wich is soon..next couple of months. It has far greater lift capacity, torque and more options, It uses the 180's cooling package. Pilot controls, A/C, and the option of 12x16.5 tires will be available for this unit. Ive operated both the new pilot unit and the hand and foot..I was impressed. Keep your eyes open for the new C175 as well. A new cab will be introduced next year. Ive only seen the virtual slid presentation. They had a model at the factory but scheduling prevented the viewing. If you are set on buying the 170 let me know I may be able to help. I have approx. 80 SSL's currently in stock.

The new L175 will be priced in the middle to upper 20's based on preliminary pricing. The C175 should be around low to mid 30's.;)
