l1501 Kubota gear oil leak

Hi My new to me L 1501 has a leak around the right rear tire. When I looked at it before purchase it looked fine but now that I have run it about an hour I see that gear oil is leaking. I think the axle is driven by a chain inside a cover and the oil may be coming from that gasket. I wonder if the gear oil for the rear end come from the transmission or is there a separate filler for the rear end. I checked the transmission and found it very low so added about 2/3 qt of 90 weight gear oil. Any ideas would be welcome.

Does your transmission take 90 wt gear oil? I could be wrong here but I guess I have never heard of that in a tranny.

Hi aand Thanks for the reply,

I just looked i the manual that came with the machine and it says SAE 80 in all seasons. So I ofcourse had a big jug of sae90 and used that instead. My main question has been do I have to fill the Differental separately. I seem to have answered that my self. I found a plug on top of the dif and poured iol in while the trans cap was open and I could see the oil leve come up in the trans.
I am crious to know if I can over fill these. The photo copy book I have shows a level plug but I have not found it yet. I will run the machine a bit today and then drain all the oil and change with sae 80 just to be safe.

I am not sure about the answer to your question. I have a Yanmar and the rear diff and trans are all one piece. It takes trans/hyd oil, about 2.7 gallons. The only place on my tractor that 90 wt oil goes is in the front axle (4wd). I learned that the info in my owner's manual can be wrong as far as drain plugs go. My manual said there was one plug under the trans but there wasn't. There were 2 plugs under the rear diff. It also said there was one plug for draining the front axle and there were 3. So sometimes you just have to look at your tractor. If it is a plug, take it off and let the fluid come out I guess, that is what I did. I think sometimes things get lost in translation going from Japenese to English in these manuals.

You don't happen to know a parts dealer for the other guy posting on this forum for your Kubota, do you?

your'e right everything behind the engine use's the same oil/fluid it's sae 80 or utd. it holds about 23 litres and lubricates the gearbox diff/rear wheels and hydraulics on the tractor. the gasket is easily replaced. i have an electronic copy of the owners manual if you want it

That's nice of you. I think they need a site here for manuals etc. for people to post to and copy if needed. Maybe one of the administrators can take care of this. I guess that's legal, or it may already be posted somewhere and I just haven't found it yet.

Wow I would really like to have the owners manual for this tractor. I have the wheel off and it looks like the seal around the axle is leaking. The gasket whith the gears inside seems ok, but I think I have to get in there to change the seal.
If you could email me the manual I would be very gratefull.
