John Deere L110 - New battery, fuel filter.

First start of the summer. It turns over with full choke, but quickly sputters and dies. It runs hard for about 15-20 sec and dies. I tried running with air cleaner off, no effect. I sprayed some WD-40 into carb and that had no effect (no rev').

What should I try next? Ive tried running it with full choke, no choke, partial. Could it possibly be a bad seat safety switch? Before I start replacing things, Im looking for ideas of what to try next

Thanks for any help you can give

Why would you spray WD40 into carb?
1.) Check fuel - pull line from carb and catch into container, to see if fuel pump is functional, if not check for plug air vent on tank, pickup in tank plugged, bad gas line from tank to pump or bad pump.
2.) Check for spark - if not check plug(s), check plug wire(s), check ignition (coil, condensor, ignitor electronic, safety devices (seat, brake, neutral, PTO)

I have spark. It will turn over. It just doesn't stay running. I didnt think to check the pickup in the tank, Ill try that next.

WD40 - Spraying this or carb cleaner will usually cause the engine to rev.

Could be a lot of different issues. So you got to start someplace. Check for spark, perhaps just put a new spark plug in.
Some times even a plug that looks OK will not function in the cylinder with the increased compression.

With electric start it's a little had to tell as you can turn the engine over by hand, but does it seem to have good compression?

If this was my tractor, I would drain out all the old gas of of the fuel tank and also remove the nut at the bottom of the carb to let any old gas out of it. Add non-ethanol gas to the tank and give it a try.

You can find a service manual for your Kohler engine here:

I should have mentioned that the gas was fresh. Unless there was a little in the lines, it should be good.

Often the carb design has an emulsion tube beneath the main jet.

Its tiny holes get blocked and the engine runs poorly if at all.

The main jet needs to be removed using absolutely the correct sized screw driver tip so you don't destroy the slot in the brass jet.

Use tiny strand of wire to poke out the small holes in emulsion tube.

It turned out to be...

A weak battery. Strong enough to crank and turn over and start... but not strong enough to run. It would crank, turn over and start and then sputter out. Swapping the battery for another one I had fixed it.

Thanks for all the help!

Doesn't sound right to me. Either the engine turns over or it doesn't. If it does than it should start. It's not like some of the older engines that had coil ignition were a weak battery would cause weak or not spark.

But I'm glad that's all you needed to get it going.
