Tractor
1998 JD 770 & 2004 Toro LX417
A friend of mine located what the seller said is a 4 X 4, 1999 or 2000 L 2500 Gear drive tractor with an LB 400 FEL and a 60" Squealer Bush Hog. It's got loaded R-1 tires in excellent shape and has 402 hours on it.

He is asking $11,000.00. Is this a fair price, keeping in mind that on the California Coast between LA and San Francisco, tractors are higher than in othe parts of the country?

The tractor appears to be in good condition with only the slightest indication of dampness at one seal on the left side of the centerdrive line tunnel about 3 inches down from the top and about 8 - 10 inches forward of the shift lever where there is a moveable rod about 5/8" diameter that comes out the side of the case and bends towards the rear.

The warm engine starts immediately with no smoke. While letting the warm tractor idle for about 5 minutes, I noticed the temp gauge at slightly over the 1/2 mark. There was some fuzzy stuff from the recent bushhog job on the radiator which may have caused it to run a little warm (at least that's what the owner claims). The owner just changed the oil and filters and said he services the cooling system himself. (I'm wondering if it was running hot and he did the cooling system to help that).

The FEL operated smoothly as did the 3 pt. The idle smoothed out at 1,000 rpm. I thought the engine responded slowly to throttle increases. MY JD 770 with about the same size engine tends to pick up rpm much more rapdly. (Obviously not the same engine, so I don't know if there is just more "flywheel effect" on the Kubota or if it indicates a problem.

The tractor looks pretty good, with only minimal rust on the ROPS. It was a vineyard lease for a year and the owner claims he bought it from the dealer in 2000 or 2001 with 172 hours on it and has used it mostly for bushhogging. The FEL was new when he bought it as was the "Hog" (Vineyard tractors are used mostly to tow Gondolas, so they usually don't have loaders, and those ar added by the dealers when they go of lease).

Again, the question is about the $11,000.00 asking price.

Also, are there anythings particular to this tractor that whould be checkd as potential weak points or problem areas.

Finally, I've been looking for some specs on this tractor on the internet with no success. If someone could give me a reference site it would be appreciated.

The potential buyer is looking mainly to bush hog up and down some hills with 10 - 15% grades and has some realistic concerns about stability. The rear tires are at their wides, and he would turn the front tires around for what looks like another 5" - 6" of front wheel footprint width. Is this a suitable tractor for that?

Any help on this would be appreciated.

Howdy, Joe! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I paid $13,600 for the exact same tractor and loader just a few years ago. Got mine out of Modesto, California as a lease return with 187 hours on it. Looked like new, and even came with a full warranty.

For some reason my hand throttle is a little like that -- I always assumed it just needs a linkage adjustment. The foot throttle seems perfectly responsive, but then again, this is my first and only tractor, so I can't compare.

I certainly wouldn't spend much time going sideways on a 15% slope. One rock/root/pinecone on the high side, or a dip or soft spot on the low side could quickly turn into a ROPS test. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Straight up and down works fine.

I have my rears set wide, too. The manual says the fronts are not adjustable.

It's a no-frills machine, but it's a perfecltly good work horse. The cockpit is a bit cramped -- takes a little practice to get in and out of the driver's seat gracefully. I wish the loader had more lift (rated at 880 lbs), but I think I would always want more muscle. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I use mine on my 40 acres in the Sierra foothills for moving piles, clearing and fixing my little back roads, brush-hogging and all sorts of tractor chores. I use my bucket forks and box blade a lot, and frequently wish I had a tooth bar on the bucket. Probably my next attachment.

If you don't have any luck finding specs, let me know and I'll scan what I have and email them to you.

I wonder if both of you are thinking of 15% or 15 degrees; big difference. I don't like 15 degrees myself; in fact, that's about my personal limit, but 15% is OK (6.75 degrees?).

Uh... oops! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Not sure I was thinking at all. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Yeah, 15 per cent is jes' fine.

BTW, Joe -- I went ahead and emailed some specs to you.

Harv:

Sounds like you think that's not a bad price.

I was definitely talking about up and down the hills, not crosswise.

It dsure look like the front wheels could be rotated left to right and would add about 6 inches. I have not seen the owner's manual on this. The fronts were reversed on my Deere; which was also a vineyard lease return. What is the bent rod coming off the left side of the driveline tunnel?

I can't tell fer sure what condition it's in, but from your description I'd say that's a better deal than I got. Yeah, sounds good.

See the attached for what the manual says about it.

My tractor lives about 120 miles from where I do, so I can't easily run out and look/take pictures right now. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

See if the attached snippets from the manual show what you're talking about.

Heck, I'll feed you the whole manual, little bit at a time. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks.

It does clearly say not to, and they obviously know best.

If I need more, I'll ask. The current owner does have the manuals, so if he buy's it, he'll get them. We're just trying to determine if it will be stable enough. The current owner was going to deliver it, so he may not mind bringing it over and letting him make a pass or two up the hills.

Thanks again.

Joe
