I posted this before, but in the wrong forum, so I'll post it here. I have a JD L 110 w/ a Kohler Command 17.5 HP. that dose'nt want to start. I used a jumper wire from batt. + to the solonoid, & got it to crank, but naturally it would'nt start cuz of all the safety switches. I need to know how to "hot wire" it to get it running temporarally. I also would like to bypass some or all of the safety switches in the system & where can I get a wiring diagram? Help is greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Hi Joe Bob;

Just to double check

Mower Blade PTO switch is off (pushed down)?
Tractor Manual Transmission switch is in NUETRAL?
Foot Brake is pushed down or locked down as you turn the crank?
Engine Oil is up to proper level? Some engines have an oil pressure safety cutoff switch
Does it turn over when this is all done?

Here is from the L110 owners troubleshooting manual
Engine Will Not Start
Brake pedal not depressed.
PTO is engaged.
Spark plug wire is loose or disconnected.
Improper fuel.
Plugged fuel filter.
Defective safety switch.
Electrical problem - See Electrical Troubleshooting Section

Engine Is Hard To Start
Carburetor is not adjusted properly or dirty.
Plugged fuel filter.
Faulty spark plug.
Stale or improper fuel.
Loose or corroded electrical connections.
Engine oil viscosity.

There is a 20-amp fuse on the battery harness. Take it out and look through the "window" to see if it is burned in two?
If you have a voltmeter, check the battery. There are 2 volts per cell, so if the meter reads 10 amps, you have a dead cell in the battery. Check connections for corrosion, of course.
The other thing might be that little push-button safety switch under the seat. If you have a continuity meter, see of the switch makes a "connection" when pushed down. If not, replace the switch and, of course, look for loose wires.
If it is turning over but not starting, check to see if you are getting "spark". Don't hang on to the plug by the metal, of course. If the plugs looks "gooey", take them in and match them up at the local parts store.
Check for "fuel" with a medicine dropper and a tad bit of gasoline. Unless the plugs are "wet", indicating a flooding problem, drop 2-3 drops in the spark plug holes and see if the engine "pops" or briefly runs and quits. If so, ream out or blow out with compressed air the vent hole in the gas cap, check the fuel lines for cracked hoses or loose connections, dry rotted rubber hose, etc. Ethanol "eats" rubber hoses for lunch. Change the fuel filter. On my LX188, I had to change out a short section of my fuel hose.
I also had the tractor quit running when a fuse in the dash blew, but I do not know if you have more than that 20 amp fuse or not?

If push comes to shove and you want to be yur own mechanic, here are the John Deere part numbers for the technical repair manual. You can look up parts "on line". If you need help with that, let me know

Technical Manual TM2026
Technical Manual on CD-ROM TM2026CD
The manual for my LX188 costs me a bit, but it saved me a 2 hour trip to the dealer and $55 an hour times ?????

Hope this helps.

Hi Scollins;
Many thanks for the info. The engine is completly dead, I can get it to crank by using a jumper from batt. + to solinoid, but because of all the switches, naturally it wont go, thats why I wanted to hotwire it to get it to temporarally run. Just need to know how.
Cheers

Hi Guys;
I got the machine running. I sat in the seat, pushed in pedal, turned ignition switch on, ran a wire from batt. to starter solonoid to get it to crank over & it started & ran. I think the trouble must be in the switch. Will look another time. Thanks guys.
Cheers

I too have a Kohler Command 17.5 HP in a john deere L110. Hard to start from cold, seems to have a little blow- by from rocker cover breather while cranking. Once started runs well, plenty of power, starts no worries hot, compression test done showed 60 PSI / 490 Kpa) Not sure if this is high enough, would think 90 PSI would be closer.

Thinking maybe a head gasket or leaky valve?? your thoughts please...

Champ; If I remember rite those engines may have a compression release to start, if so, you wouldn't get a good reading.
