We got into haying a couple of years ago and bought an older Kuhn disc mower. I replaced all the blades, changed oil in the cutting bar and transmission and gave it a good cleaning. It is generally working well. Now that we finished baling the hay I see that the mower cuts unevenly especially during turns and in heavy grass. It seems like the mower curtain pushes over the grass and the blades cut 12+ inches up the stem instead of the 4 inches it is set to. It is particularly bad if the grass is tall or laying down some due to wind/rain. It does great if growth is only 2 feet or so.

I currently have the cutting discs/blades set horizontally about 4 inches off the ground. Do I need to tilt the bar forward to cut lower? This would really dig into gopher mounds which we have a few. I'd like to get our fields looking nice and clean after haying. Currently they look pretty rough. Any tips?

Not an expert on mowing, but wonder if you can cut down the gopher mounds first with a back blade or bucket, then cut the grass to desired height? And yes, I think you need to get the mower adjusted to do what needs to be done.

tilt the bar forward and maybe slow down a little in the taller or layed over grass
