I run a ZD323 on my property, no regrets. They only look pricey, factor in they will last forever (you know what I mean) they come out less expensive over time. Question for you, why a gasser over a diesel?

I believe the diesel will have a higher cost maintenance. Is the diesel better in quality or performance? Why not a gasser over a diesel?

The diesel will give you better fuel economy, more power and is more durable. There's a reason they put diesel engines in heavy duty equipment. Yes the maintenance costs are a little higher but a diesel could literally last your lifetime assuming you are one for regular maintenance.

In some diesel applications maintenance can be more expensive because of the larger volume of engine oil, fuel filters, and water separators that need replacement more often. On a ZD, the engine oil is just less than for quarts if I remember correctly, I change the oil ever 100 hours of operation and the fuel filter yearly. I do not have a water separator. Perhaps in automotive applications the diesel is more expensive to maintain but not in this case, I think would it would be less, no spark plugs or troublesome carburetor.

Diesel fuel has more energy than gasoline thus diesel engines use considerably less fuel than gasoline engines to do the same amount of work. They also produce their torque at a lower RPM reducing the amount of fuel used. I saw a significant savings between diesel and gas mowers, about 40% less fuel used to cut the same area.

I would imagine the diesel will be less maintenance until they start putting all the emissions crap and high pressure fuel pumps on them. At that point, it will probably be a wash honestly.

Right now while we still have good ol fashion real diesels you should be good to go and they will use a lot less fuel too.

The Kubota chassis lawn mowers have been great as far as longevity. We have seen them well past the life of two gas engines and still going strong.

I always had gas engine equipment, especially lawn mowers. About 10 years ago I bought my first diesel tractor and haven't looked back.

This year I traded my gas mower for a Kubota BX2360 and enjoy not having to worry about ethanol problems that go with storing fuel. The fuel efficiency is also better than my gas mower. Plenty of power too for a 60" deck.
