I have a ZD25 mower with the D1005 E2 engine. I was having problems with the engine losing power while mowing and read one of the things to check is the injector pump. I took the injector pump off and removed the push rods and springs (sorry, I don't know the official names of these parts) checking for broken parts. All appeared fine and when I put everything back together and started the engine it only runs wide open and smokes a lot. It didn't want to turn off right away but will after about 5 to 8 seconds with the key off.

I took the injector pump back off and checked everything. I cannot see that there is a specific orientation to anything. Put it all back together and same problem.

Can some please tell me what I may have done wrong with this either putting it back together or putting it back on (or maybe both)?

Thanks

What you did wrong was take it apart without any technical information or experience. You might as well put it all in a box and take/send it to someone qualified and equipped to work on injection pumps.

Check simpler thing first, next time.
Fuel filter, bad fuel, cracked fuel line. Those are all things most anyone can handle.

As Rick said, unless you’re qualified, something like a diesel injector pump should be left to an expert.

Ahhh. I knew there was probably something technical that I was missing. Thank you for that useful information. This is how mist DIYers learn to work on things. I don't mind braking things when I have the $$ to replace them. I actually already replaced this mower with a beautiful Bob-Cat PREDATOR PRO 7000 with a 72 inch deck. Beast of a Machine!! And I am willing to spend the money to replace the pump if need be. But hey, Next time I need information that doesn't help I know I can count on you to jump in.

Loosing power was likely due to a dirty fuel filter, common problem.

OK folks, My fault for not being more detailed. My question was specifically about the injection pump so that I may attempt to get that part operating properly. I didn't disassemble the entire thing and I thought this forum may offer some TECHNICAL expert advise on how to fix this problem. So this problem started last year and I read on many forums about the fuel filers and such. What I did last year was: remove and clean out fuel tank (there was junk in the bottom), replaced all fuel lines, replaced fuel filters and filled with fresh fuel. This mower is used most weekends of the mowing season to mow about 30 acres. I bought it used 2 years ago and got it fairly cheap though I have spent some $$ replacing things. But Hay Dude, you did offer useful information and I appreciate that.

Hey no problem, and believe me....like you, I learned the hard way and tried to fix stuff I had no business fixing
Makes me recall the time I tried to fix the PTO clutches on one of my farm tractors. I couldn’t remember how the clutches went back together in the stack. :ashamed: :ashamed:
Your heart was in the right place, but you know the old saying “a mans gotta know his limitations”
You could try looking for another injection pump and bolt it on, but I think Rick is right. At this point, give it to a qualified technician. He will get you going again.

There is a governor that somehow ties the engine into the injection pump. As the engine slows down it makes the injection pump put more fuel in. I’d guess whatever ties the governor into the injection pump is not being put back together correctly or there is broken parts. The problem is I have no idea what any of this stuff looks like. For me pictures and/or diagrams help. I’d google it and see if you can find any.

Here are pics of the pump and the slot it goes in. I have watched several videos on youtube that show this or similar pumps being removed and replaced but none say anything special. I know the tab has to align with the slot and then should go into the slotted area shown in the pic. When i removed the pump it came straight out with no issues. I used a flashlight and see nothing on the inside the looks lose or broken. The pump itself it working great with plenty of pressure just runs wide open and blows lots of gray smoke.

Sometimes the last thing folks want to hear is the truth. The kind of info you need does not exist here. If you want that pump to work properly you are going to need a lot more information, some special tools and a dose of beginners luck. Or somebody qualified and equipped to do the job.

You asked what you did wrong, I told you. If you had someone watching everything you did you might have gotten a different answer.
