Any advice as to where to start problem solving?

Any advice as to where to start problem solving?

Yes actually, lots.. I would start with a voltmeter and a helper. Start by reading the voltage on the battery terminals. NOT the battery clamp terminals, but the actual battery terminals, while the helper attempts to start the machine. What does it read? . does the L4200 have safety switches? Many Kubota models do. Clutch, PTO, seat? Does the starter solenoid pull in? does the starter spin at all? Attempt to spin? So many questions...

What exactly happens when you attempt to crank the engine? So many posters say "nothing".. That tells us nothing. Be specific and tell us exactly what you see and hear when you turn the key to start. Be Verbose, in other words write a book with your observations, and what you did and what you have tried, what you smell, see, hear and feel. Remember we are hundreds if not thousands of miles away, and all we have to go on to help you repair your tractor is exactly what you tell us and nothing more. I hope this helps.

Hi,

Tractor started fine this morning and did a lot of snow clearing. Battery charger indicates battery healthy (less than a year old). This afternoon turned the ignition key and glow plug light came on ok(plus battery and oil lights) glow plug light went off and I turned the key further and no sound at all. Clutch and pto disengaged. Fuel, oil and coolant all good.

Most likely a safety switch is unhappy. Move pto lever to on the off, if hydro, make sure petal is centered, make sure seat switch is good. You'll find it. Good luck

Do you have another tractor near by with a loader that could get under it enough to turn it back over? Is it just on it's side or all the way upside down? :D

Like others said, It's likely some safety feature stopping it.

Is it open station? I've seen many have ice buildup under the seat preventing safety switching from completing its circuit.

I have had this happen to me. When it gets real cold the seat is rock hard and the switch thinks the seat is empty. I have to sit on it for awhile to warm it up some then it starts.

The L4200 is not a hydro machine, only thing I can think of would be the pto safety or the machine is in gear. I don't believe it has a seat safety, but could be wrong on that, mine didn't.
Whenever you use the glow plugs, always cycle them a few times in cold weather, 3 to 4 is always good, before starting.
Having said that, it does sound like a battery issue to me, you may have 12 volts but that could drop when trying to start it. Check all your battery connections also.
