kubota to run 5\' brush hog

I posted in the JD form that I was about to buy a 2210 for my 8 acres. Most said that tractor was going to be too small and I now tend to agree. The land is all cleared and I mainly need to rough cut the whole 8 acres. I will also want to get a FEL and a blade for snow removal.

I want to run a 5' brush hog and will need to do some light FEL work. Which kubota should I be looking at?

How much HP should I look at to run the 5' brush hog? What a 6' one?

Re: kubota to run 5\' brush hog

I used to pull a 6' Big Bee shredder with a 34 HP Kubota L2850 (27 pto hp). It would bog down in really thick grass and brush, but performed well in normal thickness/length.

I maintained about 20 acres of pasture with it.

My opinion though, is you can never buy a tractor too big. So, my two cents is, if you are stuck between two sizes of tractor, go wit the larger of the two. I'd look at at least 35 hp or higher.

Kubota recommends a 48" rotary cutter for the B2910 with 22 PTO horsepower.
I have a 60" rotary cutter that I pull behind my 2910. In heavy weeds it will bog down if I’m moving to fast. I cut most of the 2' high stuff this time of year in low range. Top speed is 3.2 mph in this range. I believe that close to 30 PTO horsepower would be needed to run a 72" rotary cutter.

Re: kubota to run 5\' brush hog

I just mowed three acres with a 60 inch cutter off my B7800. Medium range as fast as I was willing to drive. Actually, the bumpy terrain slowed me down.

Of course, I live in what is calssified as a desert so we don't get real Thick brush, good number of Yucca bushes though. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: kubota to run 5\' brush hog

thanks everyone, I have to make a trip up to the Kubota dealer tomorrow and now I know what to look for. I can't imagine why the other dealer would tell me a 17 hp pto tractor would be able to pull a 5' brush hog.

You probably should be looking in the 30hp or more range if you want a 5' bush hog. If you keep the area reasonably short (under 2' tall) then 30hp should be enough.

For the Kubota tractors, the B7800 (budget tractor) or B2910 (deluxe tractor) would be the entry point.

For New Holland, take a look at the TC30 (budget tractor) or the TC29DA (deluxe tractor).

For a 6' bush hog I would not look at anything under 35hp. Bear in mind that Kubota recommends a 48" hog for its 30hp units, but you said the land is clear so I presume you are not cutting down saplings or anything too rough. I think 30hp would get your through with a 5' hog assuming you keep the grasses under some reasonable level of control.

Re: kubota to run 5\' brush hog

I bought my 5' Land Pride from a Kubota dealer.

Although I had a 16 HP (@ the PTO) Deere 670 at the time and was looking for a 4' unit, the dealer mentioned they sell the 5' cutters to use with B7500's quite frequently.

Although I was a bit skeptical, I could not find a 4' cutter available, so I figured I'd try the 5 footer.

To my surprise, the 670/5' cutter were a great combination!! I was cutting stuff that was thick and some taller then the tractor's stack. Admittedly, I was going mighty slow (didn't know what was under the brush), but except for occasional bogging...things went well. This stuff even bogs down my 790 (with 8 more PTO HP), although the 790 recovers much quicker.

Anyway, as I'd mentioned during the reply to your Deere post, that 2210 might be too small. For most work, the 7500 series might be a bit small too (but better then the 2210 Deere), so I'd be looking at the B2400 series or bigger.

However, for brush cutting, even 16 or so PTO HP will do fine for a 5 foot cutter. Now, liftng the 5 footer (worked fine with the 670 and FEL) might be a bit more chancy...the Land Pride goes just over 600 lbs.

Re: kubota to run 5\' brush hog

Which would you rather do, go faster with the right size cutter or take all day with a cutter that is to large for the tractor? When you start stretching the cutter size to large, it will strain the tractor, because you will constantly be trying to get more out of it.

Re: kubota to run 5\' brush hog

I bought a woods 5ft.hog for my machine . It's a nice mower indeed . But I believe I could have gotten by with a 6'mower .
My reasoning is that I don't have many long pulls with it . For the most part I'm backing into brush ,or dodging ditches . It has yet to bog down because I have to go slow . John

Re: kubota to run 5\' brush hog

If it were me I would buy a L3430 or L3830.

I have a B2910 and I must say it does alright for my needs with a 60" wood rotary cutter, but I don't have thick grass to deal with, or heavy brush either.

The step up from the B series to the L series is not that much money, and you get a lot more tractor for the dollar spent.

I could never consider a medium or heavy duty brush cutter for use on my tractor. An L series could handle one no question.

Try to buy what you need the first time around. It gets expensive otherwise, or I should maybe say more expensive...

Just guessing but if I were in your position I would probably buy the L3430 and be happy for a long time. I am not sure about finish mowing with a tractor that big though...

I love my B2910 but if I had a little more property it would be on it way to the dealer and a L series would be coming back. But with only 3.7 acres that does not make sense... unfortunately...no matter how hard I try... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
