My brother-in-law has a kubota tractor with a front end loader. He's wanting a hay spear f to move round bales for his horses. He spoke with his local dealer and they quoted a Q/A spear for $650. He's wanting to know if that price can be beat by an aftermarket dealer. I told him I doubted it but I would ask here. Anybody have any advice?

Shane,

I have a Kubota Tractor with Front End Loader. If your brother-in-law has a "skid steer" quick attach set up like I do, I am sure he can do better than $650. I just purchased two "skid steer" quick attach hay spears for my Kubota Loader for less than $600. I would recommend you check out the Markham Welding Website:

Depending on what model Kubota he has, you can get a hay spear that fits on top of the bucket, instead of one to replace the bucket. It would probably be a problem with a smaller Kubota, because the spear would put the bale far in front of the bucket, and may cause the tractor to tip. But if the tractor is fairly big, it should work fine. I have a Kubota L4630, and I use a bale spear that attaches to my existing bucket, and it works fine. If I use a wrapped hayledge bale (also called a wet bale), I make sure I have an implement on the 3PH as a counterwieght, as those bales are heavier than standard round bales. I've had my bale spear for years, so I don't know what they cost now, but it would cost considerably less than $600. I have a Worksaver brand, and it works fine, and Worksaver is usually an economy brand.

For the $650 you could almost get a two-for-one set up.

I bought a Bradco QA pallet forks, then fabricated backplates (similar to the uprights on the "forks"), burned holes into them, welded the sleeves in the back plate and made (a set of two) bale spears.

You can get the spears and sleeves here: Bale Spears

The rear of the spear is tapered and threaded, and fits into and protrudes out the rear of the sleeve. You insert the spear into the sleeve and tighten a lug nut onto the rear of the threaded spear and it locks it into the sleeve.

For that ballpark price, you get pallet forks and hay spears (using the QA frame of the pallet forks).

I move 1600lb and 800lb square bales, and this system works great.

He could look at an Ag-Krane and move his bales with his 3ph...
