Kubota parts and labor costs, routine service

Just wanted to add one more data point to the purchasing decision. Took my Grand L 4330 in to the dealer for the 400 hr service:

4 different filters, 9 quarts of engine oil. 12 gallons of hydraulic oil = $438.65 before sales tax

Shop labor = $112.50

Total = $551.15 before sales tax

Labor was worth it to me not to crawl around on the floor and have old oil dripping off my elbows. Oil and filters seemed expensive.

Something to keep in mind when shopping. Maybe all brands are similar.

Parts cost does seem a bit pricey. I just priced Kubota Super UD2 at just over $100 for 5 gallons, I think you can buy Kubota filter kits for maybe $120 for all you need, and Shell Rotella T6 synthetic oil at under $20 gal. with current rebate. Some crawling required, plus some rags.

Very true. As with cars & trucks, doing your own service lets you see parts of the machine that are normally hidden from view. While wriggling around under there, I'm taking note of any seeping/leaking areas, exposed filters, linkages & hoses, condition of rubber boots, any sticks lodged where they shouldn't be, the other side of tire sidewalls, etc. Being that it's important to me, I will take the time to do this carefully. A dealer's mechanic may or may not, depending on how backed up the shop is.

I would second that- poking around under your tractor, or car, or whatever, shows you things that might benifit from some oil, or grease, or whatever that a mechanic often doesn't concern themselves with. My "new" 2004 L31030, supposedly just "serviced" by the selling Kubota dealer, may have gotten its oil changed, and filters replaced, but they didn't bother to grease anything, or find the broken grease zerk, or the loader pin that was coming out... Other than that, so far so good.

At one time I did my own service on...well everything. At one count that was over 20 things with an engine in them. One being a race car with quite a few 1-off parts...and let me tell you guys something, that puts parts prices into a real perspective....$4,000 crank, $3,300 in roller rockers, and the list goes on.

But I am older now, with some miles on me and some battle damage...I don't want to screw with it any more....I will if I want to but not because I have to.

At this stage of my life I will just wright the check, I can see enough of the machine when I have to grease everything...there has to be a billion grease fittings on the silly thing.

It is easy for me to do the work too, I have a nice shop, heat and AC, lift but it is really just a play area....it is amazing how much time you can spend doing so little. I am currently re-doing what is likely going to be my last car, a 1963 VW Bug. I have done so many in the past, this one I picked because it was cheap, there are tons of stuff to do, parts not expensive, and not heavy plus they are real easy to work on.

But in the end I do agree, no one will take care of your vehicle like you will provided you actually DO IT...and DO IT RIGHT. (there is a song in there somewhere)
