Kubota M9000 question

Howdy All;
I am looking for a small to medium tractor. I recently came upon a Kubota M9000 tractor for sale. The owner says he will sell the tractor, minus the engine. It has the 90hp 4 cyl diesel in it. Upon further questioning about the engine, he states that the state of California will not let him sell the engine due to smog rules, etc. I have never heard of this regulation and wonder why (?). It was a great deal for me and I did want the tractor. Any thoughts on why the engine has to be destroyed...

It's possible that he could sell it to an out of state buyer without destroying the engine. Do you have any friends in Nevada or Arizona who could buy it and maybe let you borrow it??

Yet another example of misguided policies, think of all the natural resources (ore, oil etc) that went into making that tractor, and all that will be required to replace the entire tractor with another one that "doesn't pollute" Most environmental people don't let logic stand in the way of saving the world.

I somehow doubt the guy knows what he is talking about. Does the "state of CA" know he owns it?, funny they don't arrest him or something for owning it lol.

An M9 isn't a small or medium sized tractor, it'a a large utility tractor.

That just depends on the size of your other tractors... If this is your other tractor: , then pretty much any Kubota is a small or medium tractor.

Sounds fishy to me, even for that area. I would not buy it that way but look elsewhere. There are lots of tractors for sale and they keep making more every day. That's my two cents.

Affected vehicles are those that operate on diesel-fuel, dual-fuel, or alternative diesel-fuel that are registered to be driven on public highways, were originally designed to be driven on public highways whether or not they are registered,.............

I think the tractor is exempt as it wasn't originally designed to be driven on public highways, even though it can be, if you aren't going to register it.
And if necessary you buy it from him with a receipt that says it has no engine. If he gives you the engine gratis........

Wow hard to believe it would apply to a private sale on an agricultural piece of off highway equipment. We have a low profile M9000 at the orchard were I work its been very reliable tractor.

I have heard of this with large earth moving eq. in CA. also. They are making retro fit smog chit to add on to make it legal. Big bucks, but so it the equipment.
Could you buy the tractor as "scrap" written in the invoice, or the motor sepratly? I can't imagine that the CA govt. requires a "paper trail" of that motor all the way to the scrap yard (or out of state). But it is CA. ?

You know that is around a 100 hp tractor right?
