Kubota L4400 HST
Thank you for reading this.

I just recently bought a Kubota L4400 HST with front loader and backhoe. I put the tractor in high gear with the tractor idled up, started pressing the pedal to go forward and the tractor bogs down and wants to die, it does not seem to matter if I am going uphill, downhill or on flat ground, If you play with it you might get the tractor to run in high buy it does not seem to move much faster then med. I talked to the local Kubota dealer and they suggested to change the fuel filter, I did and the filter was covered in a slime. After changing the filter I have not noticed a change in how it is running in high. I put some fuel cleaner in the tank last night but have not had a chance to run it.

Is there something I am missing?

Has anyone else has this problem?

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thank you

CJ

on my MF1540 hydro, the high range is basically useless (in my opinion) for anything except travel on a flat road.

For using the fel in dirt, i’m always in low range, then shift to middle range when transporting the dirt.

My L2501 works fine in high range (HST) if I pay attention to what I'm doing. Hi range does NOT like idle. The engine must be turning over at 1500 to 2000 rpm to do any good. It does not like hi range when cold. It also lacks hi range power if I forget to release the parking brake.

THe tractor seems to work well in low. I very rarely run it at anything under full idle

You are expecting too much.

High range is of little use for anything but travel on level paved surfaces and without much load. Your BH is quite heavy.

This is pretty much standard operating procedure for HST CUTs.

HST is a pump system with engine power transmitted through hydraulic fluid.

Have you checked level of hydraulic fluid?

Have you checked for obstructed hydraulic fluid filter? You may have enough hydraulic fluid but it may not be circulating properly.

If you are trying to move from a stop on soft ground, in HST/High, with HST pedal depressed all the way, it might bog.

Counter-intuitively, HST transmissions produce LESS torque at the wheels when HST pedal is fully applied.

Try initiating movement on level ground in HST/High with 1/3 HST pedal applied.

Some say HST L-M-H transmission ranges are abbreviations for L = LOADER, M = MOWING, H = HIGHWAY

On a hard surface, not dirt, I speculate your Backhoe equipped 44-horsepower HST tractor should be capable of 14 mph over level asphalt or concrete.

With HST...............High is for road use,I run mine in medium 90% of time.

I'd consider the use of some algaecide in the fuel if the filter was slimy. Almost sounds like the tractor had set for some time without use.

Define "full idle". If the tractor is running at idle speed and you try to go anywhere in high range it will act like you describe: dull and want to stall. If you put in high range and then rev up to near 540 PTO rpm equivalent, you should be fine with good power and no stalling.

So does it improve dramatically if you increase engine rpm? Not to be silly or insulting but the brakes are'nt set or stuck are they?
